Just 1 Word: Former Champion James Toney Sums Up Terence Crawford’s Chances Of Beating Canelo In Just 1 Word

Can Terence Crawford jump up a further two divisions and beat Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez? Former three-weight world champion James Toney has given his take.

Though Terence Crawford only recently made his debut at super-welterweight, he now wants to pack on a further 14 pounds to challenge Canelo, who has been ruling the roost at super-middleweight for years.

Both men are four-division world champions and considered two of the best fighters in the sport. However, many feel that, even despite Crawford’s elite skillset, the ask is too much here given the size difference.

Toney – who is no stranger to weight jumps having won world titles at middle, super-middle and cruiser as well as challenging at heavyweight – first told AB Boxing News that he didn’t see any contenders in Crawford’s current division handing him his first loss.

“Terence Crawford is an incredible fighter. It’s gonna be hard to beat him, anybody at 154.”

Asked specifically about moving up in weight to face Canelo, Toney said ‘Bud’ wins ‘easy’ before sneaking in a comparison to himself.

“Easy win [for Crawford]. Easy win. Trust me … Canelo is a good fighter, but he’s not on James Toney’s level.”

Canelo’s options for bouts in the super-middleweight ranks that attract serious attention are dwindling, particularly since David Benavidez has moved up to light-heavyweight. It’s for that reason that many in the sport feel that the Crawford fight, which he once all but dismissed, now looks likely

He has made it clear that he will begin looking at opponents in January, likely for a May return. With Crawford just returning from some niggling injuries, the timelines may sync up for a megafight.
