Novak Djokovic will be the favourite when they clash a

Rafael Nadal insists Novak Djokovic will be the favourite when they clash at the Paris Olympics, after the Spaniard battled to victory over Marton Fucsovics in the first round on Sunday. Nadal had left his participation in the singles in doubt until the last minute because of a thigh injury, and was made to work hard for his 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory. The 38-year-old — who has won 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles on the clay of Roland Garros — believes old rival Djokovic will be favourite when they meet for the 60th time.

“Situations are completely different for him, for me. He’s being very competitive. I was not being very competitive for the last two years, so in that case, I think probably he is the clear favourite,” said Nadal, who holds an 8-2 head-to-head advantage over the Serb at Roland Garros.

“I’m going to try my best to bring the best to the court and then let’s see how far I can go and how many problems I can create for him.”

The latest chapter of a generation-defining rivalry, and perhaps the final act, will bring Nadal and Djokovic full circle — the duo having met as teenagers in their very first meeting in the 2006 Roland Garros quarter-finals.

Outside round-robin matches in the season-ending ATP Finals, their second-round encounter at the Olympics will be the earliest they have ever met at a tournament.

“It has always been super special to play against Novak, no doubt about that,” said Nadal. “But the difference is normally we have been playing for finals or for semi-finals.

“Of course, it’s an Olympics… every match is super special. But it’s true that at the same time, almost every single match that I played against Novak, I arrive at it with a different situation that I am today.

“So that makes the match more difficult for me and more unpredictable. But, I always have hope, I always believe.”

‘Fighting spirit’

Nadal, a singles gold medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and doubles champion at Rio four years later, is playing just his seventh tournament of 2024.

He reached the final in Bastad last weekend but suffered a setback in training on Wednesday, jeopardising his hopes of appearing at a fifth Olympics.

Nadal teamed up with Carlos Alcaraz in the doubles on Saturday, but he had his right thigh heavily bandaged as the pair won their first-round match in straight sets.

His leg sported similar strapping against Fucsovics, but Nadal said he was feeling “good”. “Bit tired, of course. I mean, a long match, but at the same time… it was a good test,” said Nadal.

“The good thing is I was able to play at a good level of tennis for a while. That always gives hope. And then (the) negative stuff is I was not able to hold that great level.”

Fucsovics suggested the Spaniard still had what it takes to beat Djokovic, who leads the career head-to-head 30-29.

“He was fighting until the end, so his fighting spirit is still at the top still, but he’s not at his best playing level,” said Fucsovics.

“But if he has a good day he can beat him (Djokovic) still.”

The path is clear for undefeated lightweight champions Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson to star in an all-American unification bout.

Following his emphatic knockout of Frank Martin to keep the WBA title, Davis promptly entered early talks with IBF Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko but the Ukrainian would later back out due to a lack of motivation to fight again this year.

Stevenson: "I'm Going To Be The Person To Expose Tank Davis"

Enter Stevenson, who has just come off a criticised but straightforward defence of his WBC strap against Artem Harutyunyan and has long been saying both Davis and Lomachenko are avoiding him. In theory, nothing stands in the way of the Davis fight now if both want it.

In an interview with the It Is What It Is podcast, Floyd Mayweather – who guided a large portion of ‘Tank’s career before a bitter split – singled out the two stars as the best in the division for very different reasons.

“You got guys fighting between 130, 135 and 160. They stacked around that area. As of right now, the two guys… The biggest puncher at 135 would probably be Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, but the most skullful fighter at 135 would be, hands down, Shakur Stevenson.”

Davis has beaten all but two opponents inside the distance with some of he most well-timed and devastating power punches in the sport. Stevenson has just a 45% knockout-to-win ratio but has, by the numbers, the best defence in the sport.

Asked if skills were enough to be the best without the power to keep opponents honest, Mayweather said yes.

“It’s really all about skills. Pernell Whitaker wasn’t a huge puncher, but he was very exciting, very tough and he fought everybody. Shakur’s tryna do the same thing. He want to fight the best they got out there. He’s asking can he fight the best. I believe his contract is coming to an end so hopefully we can come together and I can get him to the next level with the fights he needs, that he wants.”

Stevenson‘s team has had conversations with Mayweather since this interview and are also entertaining talks from Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom. Davis is with PBC, meaning there’s a chance he explores that side of the fence too.

‘Tank’s co-trainer, Kenny Ellis, has said that the only way the fight doesn’t happen next will be ‘fear’ on Shakur’s part.

The show was so intense that nearby citizens thought there was an earthquake when Scott performed his hit “FE!N” eight times in a row. However, the rumbling was actually caused by 80,000 fans going wild.

Mayweather, sporting an Avi & Co. watch valued at nearly 500,000 dollars, wisely stayed out of the intense areas of the crowd. He wasn’t the only celebrity in attendance with NBA superstar James Harden also enjoyed the electrifying night.

A lawsuit has since been filed against Mayweather, with the man looking to receive several thousands of dollars in damages, with his injuries having caused significant emotional distress, as well as a physical inability to comply with his work commitments.

Shakur Stevenson’s team is prepared to enter into negotiations with Gervonta Davis over a possible fight.

Davis was in talks to face Vasyl Lomachenko in a WBA and IBF lightweight world title unification clash this year.

All indications are that conversations were progressing well between Bob Arum’s Top Rank (who promote Lomachenko) and Al Haymon’s PBC (who represent Davis) for a November showdown.

However, Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas has declared the Ukrainian slickster doesn’t have the motivation to box again this year and so won’t return to the ring until 2025.

Shakur Stevenson Responds To Gervonta Davis Callout

With the Loma fight off the table for the back end of this year, Davis’ co-trainer Kenny Ellis indicated that they may target a fight with WBC champion Stevenson next.

Stevenson’s co-manager Josh Dubin, insists their “phone lines are open.”

“It’s all up to ‘Tank.’ The one thing about Shakur – he will take anyone you put in front of him,” Dubin told BoxingScene on Tuesday.

“We’re here and waiting and ready to negotiate.”

Boxing Scene reported that there have been preliminary discussions between Davis and Stevenson’s representatives although Dubin declined to comment.

“We’ll know how realistic (Davis and PBC’s interest) is by how financially viable they make it for Shakur,” he added.

“They know Shakur produced the highest-rated ESPN card of the year (July 6), so they need to come correct…

“It’s a fight Shakur really wants. He’s been begging for it for a long time.

“What Shakur wants to do – let me say it plainly – is to unify at 135. The logical fights to make that happen are to fight the champions.”

Dubin also revealed that they had tried to get a unification fight over the line with WBO champion Denis Berinchyk but that they “couldn’t get a straight answer.”

The Mexican puncher has been ordered by the WBC to box Stevenson next but his promoter Oscar De La Hoya has indicated that he will likely go down the WBO route.

The collision course Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson have been on since rising through the ranks may just be ready to reach its end.

The two Americans are now champions in the lightweight division, both yet to be defeated and considered to be amongst the elite in the sport of boxing.

He then claimed, which will come as a surprise to many fans, that Pacquiao hit no harder than ‘Pretty Boy’, but just more often.

“I’d have say they were about the same.

It’s funny, because I didn’t feel Pacquiao’s punch, it didn’t do anything to me, maybe it’s because Pacquiao was coming up in weight, I believe that was his first fight at welterweight so I didn’t really feel his punch. With him it was more of an accumulation, you know, but I would say about the same, they punch the same.”

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Tiger Woods watched his son, Charlie, shoot a 10-over 80 on Tuesday and miss the cut at 22 over through two rounds at the U.S. Junior Amateur.

The 15-year-old Woods, who earned a spot in the 264-player field last month, finished near the bottom of the pack.

The top 64 players advance to match play, which begins Wednesday. The 36-hole championship match is Saturday.

Woods did fare better on the Oakland Hills South Course, which Ben Hogan dubbed “The Monster,” than he did with an opening 12-over 82 on the North Course.

Woods got off to a solid start on Day 2, handling the challenge of teeing off in front of about 500 people standing between him and steel girders that will be part of a new clubhouse.

His game, and the clubhouse, are under construction.

Woods was 1 over through four holes when a storm stopped play for more than an hour.

When play resumed, he closed the front nine by playing five holes in 8 over, including a triple bogey on the par-4 18th, where he had two pitches land on an elevated green only to roll back down the hill. He finally got his fifth shot to stay on the green.

The junior amateur usually draws a few hundred fans toward the end of the six-day tournament, but Charlie and his famous father attracted a relatively large crowd.

Tiger was surrounded by more people, including police officers, protecting him than were following most of the other groups on the course.

He had his own gallery, which included fans taking photos of themselves with one of golf’s all-time greats in the background.

Hundreds of people walked behind Charlie on the fairway, and completely circled the 10th green, his first hole of the day.

Tiger, who was 14 when he qualified for his first U.S. Junior, became the only player to win the tournament three times in a row in the early 1990s.

Despite the criticism, many fans have come to Williams’ defense. Some pointed out that the makeup applied may have exaggerated her features rather than indicating any surgical enhancements.

Misogynoir and body image

The backlash against Williams has also been framed within the context of misogynoir. One critic commented on how people managed to turn a video about tennis into a botox witch-hunt. This highlights the ongoing struggle many women, particularly women of color, face regarding societal beauty standards.

Paris Olympics 2024: Coco Gauff is set to make her debut in the showpiece event and has taken inspiration from the legendary Serena Williams, who has four Olympic gold medals to her name.

Coco Gauff said that she has looked up to the legendary Serena Williams before stepping out for the Paris Olympics. The World No.2 will be one of the top contenders to win a gold medal in the upcoming quadrennial event. Back in 2019, Gauff, at the age of 15, grabbed eyeballs after she defeated Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon.

However, the 2023 US Open-winner never locked horns with Serena, which remains her ‘only regret’. However, Gauff said that she relishes her relationship with the American legend, who she deems as her ‘friend and mentor’.

Wimbledon: Serena Williams inspired Coco Gauff to play tennis

“You’ve been lucky enough that your on-court relationships have turned into off-court friendships. One of those notable friendships is with your idol, Serena Williams. Serena was once just a stranger printed on a poster hanging in your room, and now you still can’t believe she’s a friend and mentor,” Gauff wrote in a letter on the NBC Olympics website.

Having won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, Serena is one of the greats of the game. Serena also has four Olympic medals to her name. Gauff was in awe of the way Serena conducted herself and made a reputation of a champion.

“Her profound impact on tennis, what it means to be a champion and to break barriers, is a legacy you hope to uphold and carry with you into your first Olympic Games,” she wrote.

Gauff is one of the six members of USA’s tennis team, along with Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro, Desirae Krawczyk and Emma Navarro. Apart from taking part in singles, Gauff will also play doubles with Pegula.

“The excitement is overwhelming. You can’t wait to travel with your teammates, to take on the Olympic tennis tournament and hopefully increase the United States’ medal count that you continually check each Olympics,” Gauff added.

But as the buildup continues toward Shields challenging WBC heavyweight world champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse this weekend, live on DAZN, the 29-year-old also believes that she’s sharing the spotlight at the top.

During an exclusive interview with DAZN News, Shields named her Mount Rushmore of current great women’s boxers, building stellar company around her.

“Right now, if there’s a Mount Rushmore of women’s boxers, I would say it’s myself, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano and maybe Mikaela Mayer,” Shields offered.

“You can even add Savannah Marshall,” she tacked on.

Despite each of the aforementioned boxers having held multiple world titles, Shields also believes that herself, Taylor, Serrano and Mayer stand out for their respective energized fan followings. As does Marshall.

“They have their own fan base, fans come out to see them,” Shields said, “and we all kind of get behind each other and support each other here and there.”
