Congratulation as Claressa Shields Beats Danielle Perkins to Become Undisputed Heavyweight Champion

Claressa Shields continued her case as the GWOAT with a unanimous decision win over Danielle Perkins to become the undisputed heavyweight champion in front of a hometown crowd at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan.

The stark size difference was noticable from the jump. Perkins’ build as a legitimate heavyweight towered over Shields

However, it didn’t take long for the big skills gap to show up either. Shields took it to her opponent and immediately put pressure on Perkins to return fire.

The GWOAT had her first major moment in the third round when she rocked Perkins with a clean right hand.

Perkins did settle in to some degree after the first few rounds. Former welterweight champion Shawn Porter gave Perkins a round after she forced Shields into some exchanges.

If there’s a criticism to be made of Shields it was that she may have taken her foot off the gas in the later rounds. She was countering Perkins hard, but wasn’t exactly going all-out to finish the fight.

That was, until she landed an absolute missile of a right hand that floored Perkins in the final seconds.

Shields had previously won the WBC heavyweight championship, but her victory over Perkins added the previously vacant WBO and IBF championship belts to her stacked trophy case. Shields now holds active belts in three different weight classes with two middleweight titles and the WBO light heavyweight championship currently on her resume.

In total, Shields has won world titles in five different weight classes and it’s hard to come up with who can really give her a challenge on paper.

The 29-year-old wasn’t even calling out any of her potential opponents in women’s boxing. She did, however, have some words for YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

“Jake Paul cannot beat me in a fight,” she told Patrick Snell of CNN. “Anybody who thinks that needs to just go and wash their face and brush their teeth and kind of wake up and smell the real air in the world.”

She went on to say that she didn’t think Paul would accept a fight against her but extended an invitation to spar with her.

That alone would probably do well if it were offered as a public broadcast.

As it stands, the biggest challenge for Shields is going to be finding opponents that can generate some interest in her fights. Shields has mentioned IBF light heavyweight champion Lani Daniels as a possible challenger and undefeated WBA light heavyweight champion Che Kenneally could be another option.

But Shields would still be a prohibitive favorite against those world champions.

Uncrowned has Claressa Shields vs. Danielle Perkins live results, round-by-round updates, highlights, ring walks and start time for the Shields vs. Perkins fight card on Sunday night at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan. WBC heavyweight champion Shields defends her belt against Perkins with the vacant WBA, IBF and WBO belts also on the line.

Shields (15-0, 3 KOs), Uncrowned’s No. 1 pound-for-pound women’s boxer in the world, is a five-division champion and former two-division undisputed champion, having held the undisputed super welterweight crown in 2021 and the undisputed middleweight title twice between 2019 and 2024. Shields won the WBC heavyweight title with a second-round knockout of Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse this past July.

Perkins (5-0, 2 KOs) has never been scheduled for more than eight rounds and comes into the bout as far less experienced than her championship opponent. Perkins boxed on the undercard of Shields’ fight with Lepage-Joanisse, winning a wide unanimous decision over Christianne Fahey.

This weekend, Claressa Shields will attempt to increase her collection of heavyweight titles when she takes on Danielle Perkins in a clash that has been eagerly anticipated by boxing fans for some time

Shields will make the first defense of her WBC crown as she pursues the undisputed crown against the challenger, who is seeking her first world title.

Shields, a two-weight undisputed champion with a brilliant career so far, goes into the ring as the favorite to take the victory, but will also be wary of any possible danger in the event to be held at the Dort Financial Center in Detroit, Michigan.

The two-time Olympic champion Shields (15-0, 3 KOs) will look to keep her professional unbeaten streak alive in her hometown of Michigan against undefeated heavyweight contender Danielle Perkins.

The fight will be for Shields’ WBC heavyweight title and the WBO light heavyweight title, as well as the vacant WBA heavyweight title.

“I feel very blessed at this time in my life and career,” Shields said in a statement. “But make no mistake, every blessing came with blood, sweat and tears. My home in Flint helped shape me into the person I am today. That city, with all its struggles and strengths, built something in me that cannot be broken.

“Without Flint and the determination I developed there at an early age, I don’t know if I would be here today. I can’t wait for this homecoming event,” Claressa added.

While Perkins (5-0, 2 KOs), a native of Brooklyn, New York, won her last fight by unanimous decision over Christianne Fahey in July to become the top-ranked contender, Shields has taken note of this.

“Danielle Perkins is undefeated and a strong contender, but I’ve been fighting my whole life, not just in the ring,” said Shields. “Whether it’s in my personal life, in the amateur boxing ring or as a professional world champion, I just don’t fail. February 2 will be no different.”

‘100 percent intent to kill’: Claressa Shields vs Danielle Perkins press conference quotes

Claressa Shields and Danielle Perkins will square off in a Sunday evening main event from Flint, Mich., streaming live on DAZN, for the undisputed championship of the women’s heavyweight division, which realistically doesn’t actually exist, but all the same, it’s Shields trying to become a three-weight undisputed champ.

Shields says she’s not overlooking Perkins, and that she believes the naturally bigger woman to be a dangerous opponent.

“Danielle might be stronger, she is smooth and has skills,” Shields said. “She went to the world championships and won a gold medal and a bronze. I won three gold medals at the world championships and two Olympic gold medals.

“Danielle may not be the fastest, she’s unorthodox and is a southpaw, but when she hits her opponents, their whole game plans change.”

The 29-year-old Shields (15-0, 3 KO) will be an enormous favorite in the fight, because she has simply proven herself a level — at least — above her competition so many times now, and on paper, Perkins (5-0, 2 KO) just doesn’t seem like the woman to change that.

But Perkins says nobody has seen her at her best yet, because she struggles to find decent opposition herself.

“No one has ever wanted to fight me,” Perkins said, after giving Shields credit for fighting as a heavyweight. “I have only had five professional fights because no one wants to step in the ring with me. It’s unfortunate because I’ve got some skills.

“I know that Claressa is up for the challenge. This is a real risk. No other middleweight would ever take this kind of risk.”

Perkins, 42, admits that she and Shields are friends outside of the ring, but insists that will have no bearing on how she fights.

“I have never had any ill will toward Claressa outside of the ring, but I am going into this fight with 100 percent intent to kill,” she said. “It has nothing to do with her outside of the ring.”
