After back-to-back losses Deontay Wilder Makes Final Decision On Retirement After Brutal KO Loss At 39 Years Old

Deontay Wilder has suffered back-to-back losses in his last two bouts.

The long-reigning WBC Heavyweight Champion was at one stage knocking out all comers, having built up a record of 39 stoppages from 40 fights before coming up against Tyson Fury

The pair of heavyweights first fought to a draw, but Fury would hand Wilder his first two losses inside the distance in fight two and three.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ took a year out of the ring before beating Robert Helenius in the first round, but another 14 months of inactivity followed. He was then upset by Joseph Parker over the distance and, in a fight he admitted could be his last, knocked out by Zhilei Zhang six months later.

A low-level comeback fight pencilled in for April was recently scrapped, leaving many in the sport feeling that the devastating puncher from Tuscaloosa, Alabama could move off quietly into retirement.

Speaking to Space Port Sweden, coach and close personal friend to Wilder, Malik Scott, said in no uncertain terms that the former champion will be fighting again.

“Fighting is in Deontay’s heart. He’ll fight again. Deontay will fight again. He just moves on his own terms and does things how he wants to do them.

“Especially when it comes to the business aspect of things because like I said he doesn’t need this, so he ain’t going to do it if all the terms are not right.

“He’s still Deontay Wilder. He’s still big time boxing and people still want to see him. He’ll fight again.”

Whether or not Wilder will attempt a low-key comeback before chasing big fights remains to be seen, however Scott did mention both Francis Ngannou and Anthony Joshua as potential opponents.

Significantly Deontay Wilder Future Now In Serious Doubt As Major Update On Comeback Fight Revealed

Deontay Wilder‘s plan to return to the ring this April has been canned.

The knockout artist from Alabama is a former long-reigning WBC Heavyweight Champion, only meeting his match 44 fights into his professional campaign when Tyson Fury stopped him to snatch the belt. In their third and final fight the Brit would produce the same result

Deontay Wilder took time out before returning with a first round knockout against Robert Helenius. Further inactivity followed before he was comprehensively out pointed by Joseph Parker in Saudi Arabia and knocked out by Zhilei Zhang in the fight after. It left many in the sport expecting the 39-year-old to retire, particularly since he looked far from his old dangerous self in those latest outings.

Despite even admitting that defeat to Zhang could spell the end of his career, Wilder would go on to confirm that he would fight on and ‘the best is yet to come.’ His road back to the top was to begin in April on a BLK Prime promotion against journeyman Curtis Harper.

Harper – best known for walking out of the ring on the first bell against top contender Efe Ajagba – had confirmed he signed for the fight, though the announcement press conference was cancelled due to the devastating wild fires in Los Angeles. World Boxing News now reports that the fight has been pulled entirely, with Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel confirming the situation but ‘wouldn’t comment when asked if Wilder had decided to retire.’

Fans of ‘The Bronze Bomber’ will hope that this could mean he has landed a more significant fight with another promotion, however there is the real possibility that he returns to the drawing board, eight months out of action and counting

Joe Rogan in Disbelief Over Deontay Wilder’s Insane Power Despite Having Legs That “Look Like Sticks”

Deontay Wilder would probably be grinning ear to ear if he heard what Joe Rogan just said. After all, the past few years have been anything but smooth sailing for him. Well, except for 2022—when he scored a brutal first-round knockout against Robert Helenius.

Since then, it’s been a rough ride. His biggest roadblock? Tyson Fury. Their rivalry haunted him until 2021, with back-to-back losses knocking him off his throne. To add on, 2023 threw another curveball his way. He lost to Joseph Parker, missing out on the WBC International Heavy and WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight titles. Then, in 2024, he took another hit—Zhilei Zhang stopped him with a fifth-round TKO.

So yeah, it’s been a rollercoaster. But hearing what Rogan really thinks of him might be the spark the 39-year-old needs. So what exactly did he say? Let’s find out.

Deontay Wilder Hits Like a Truck, But…

A few days ago, Joe Rogan was geeking out over Deontay Wilder’s ridiculous knockout power in one of his podcasts with Michael Kosta. Joe Rogan said he’s “the greatest one-punch knockout artist in the history of the heavyweight division.” And honestly, he’s got a point. The Bronze Bomber isn’t just a knockout artist. Rogan also noted that the former WBC Heavyweight champion’s record was insane at one point. “Like 39 Knockouts out of 40 fights,” Rogan stated. Well, that’s not exactly an everyday story—it’s a rare phenomenon, isn’t it?

But do you know what makes it even crazier? It’s the fact that Deontay Wilder isn’t even the biggest heavyweight. When he fought The Gypsy King for the first time in 2018, Fury was walking around at 256½ pounds. And Wilder? Well, he was just 212½. Now, that’s over a 40-pound difference! And yet, it never mattered. Why? Because Wilder’s right hand is the equalizer.

As the conversation continued, Joe Rogan further brought up his 10th-round TKO victory against Luis Ortiz in 2018 to make the point. And you see, Ortiz isn’t exactly a piece of cake. He was on the Cuban Olympic team, a super-skilled guy. Ultimately, that didn’t make a difference. Rogan pointed out, “He’s just waiting, waiting, wait blam!! and he hits guys and they’re like what the fu–.” And that’s the thing about Wilder!

But there’s something else. After considering him a slick boxer, Joe Rogan also pointed out a bizarre detail, moving away from the compliments. Pointing at the 43-4 boxer’s feet, he said, “His movement is sometimes awkward. He’s criticized for having a bad foot where his legs look like sticks. He has the skinniest legs you’ve ever seen in your life, like it’s crazy.” But leaving that aside, if you ask about the power? “Out of this world,” Joe Rogan concluded.

Wilder isn’t your typical heavyweight like Zhilei Zhang or Tyson Fury for example. He’s not the biggest, or most technical, but when it comes to sheer knockout power, he’s in a league of his own. But the question remains, when is he coming back in the ring?

Stephen Shaw fueled the Wilder fight rumors

In the beginning of 2025, rumors started flying about Deontay Wilder making a comeback. The opponent you ask? It’s Stephan Shaw. When? In April on BLK Prime PPV in Atlanta, Georgia. Sounded like a solid fight, right? Well…it wasn’t.

Shaw himself shut down the rumors in an interview with sports journalist, Hans Themistode. He seemed just as surprised as the rest of us. “I just woke up one morning and they were talking about the fight,” he said. Here’s what exactly happened, someone called him up, telling him the news was spreading. But in reality, not a single offer was received either by him or his team.

Deontay wilder

However, Shaw saw an opportunity to fight the former heavyweight champion played along for a bit. Shaw admitted that he himself reshared the story to keep the hype going. “Today I saw this information on a blog and shared it. I feel that this fight would be perfect for me,” he said. And honestly, he has a point. The boxer had a history with Wilder. He’s been sparring with him since 2017, from the Gerald Washington fight all the way up to Wilder’s last bout against Zhang. So, in his mind, it made sense to run along with the idea before even checking in with his manager. But in the end, he had to admit, “Honestly, right now it’s all smoke and mirrors.”

Shaw clearly wanted this fight. But with this rumor falling apart, the big question is, when is Deontay Wilder coming back? And if he does, who should he fight next?

Deontay Wilder ‘signs deal’ for next fight with boxer who fled the ring in infamous clash

Deontay Wilder has reportedly signed his side of the deal for a shock comeback fight with Curtis Harper.

It was reported earlier this week that Harper, a journeyman with an 18-11 record, had agreed to box Wilder.

He was said to be one of several opponents being explored by Wilder’s team, although it now appears he is the frontrunner.

A boxing official familiar with the situation informed Boxing Scene that both Wilder and Harper have submitted signed contracts to fight in a bout which is being targeted for April 26 in Atlanta.

American streaming service BLK Prime will broadcast the heavyweight clash as Wilder vies to rebuild his career following a poor run of form.

The Tuscaloosa puncher has looked like a shadow of his former self since his trilogy with Tyson Fury and has lost four out of his last five fights.

Following a routine first-round knockout win over Robert Helenius in October 2022, Wilder stepped up his level of opposition in two Riyadh Season cards.

He was battered from pillar to post in a points loss to Joseph Parker in December 2023 before the former WBC heavyweight champion was knocked out by Zhilei Zhang in June.

By contrast, Jacksonville’s Harper is riding a four-fight win streak.

However, every single victory comes against a fellow journeyman with a losing record.

His last meaningful fight took place in December 2023 when he was dispatched in the eighth round by Olympic silver medallist Richard Torrez Jr.

Other notable names he has boxed and subsequently lost to include Efe Ajagba, Zhang, Chris Arreola, and Bakhodir Jalolov.

His defeat to Ajagba is the one that will stick out in most boxing fan’s minds.

He later confirmed that he did so over a pay dispute.

Explaining the situation his promoter Rick Glaser elaborated: “What happened here was, on August 12, Curtis was given a contract to fight Ajagba for $6,000.

“He specifically asked the person who gave him the contract whether the fight would be on TV and was told no.

“He signed the contract on August 13 and sent it back that day. After that, he was treated like garbage.

“He and his wife didn’t get their plane tickets until Aug. 22 [the day of their flight].

“They flew into Minneapolis and waited at the airport for an hour and 45 minutes before they were picked up.

“Then, at the weigh-in on Thursday, Curtis learned that contrary to what he’d been told before, his fight was going to be on TV.

I doubt he really want it : Roy Jones Jr Predicts Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder: “Does He Really Want It?”

Roy Jones Jr is one of many people who would still like to see Anthony Joshua square off with Deontay Wilder.

These two former heavyweight champions of the world were sitting at the top of the division for many years at the same time. They are both big punchers and exciting fighters who put together plenty of high profile knockouts but frustratingly never managed to align with each other and battle it out in the ring

Recent years have pushed them even further apart as Wilder lost two of his three fights with Tyson Fury, and then his rebuild attempts went the same way as he lost to Joseph Parker and was then stopped by Zhilei Zhang.

That was his last outing last June, and since then, there have been only rumours that he will return.

It was Oleksandr Usyk who dethroned Anthony Joshua and last time out in September the Brit was stopped by Daniel Dubois as he attempted to become a three-time world champion.

Speaking to iFL TV, multi-weight world champion and boxing legend Jones Jr felt that Joshua would come out on top were they to fight any time soon.

“That’s a tough fight but I think Joshua has a better chance of winning that fight. I don’t think Joshua is as damaged as Wilder. Wilder with Parker showed he looked like he didn’t really want it so we’ll see what Wilder shows up.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ has lost four of his last five fights and is now 39-years-old so the clock is very much ticking on his career.

I don’t Think he can win,Tyson Fury Warns Anthony Joshua to Stay Well Away From One Boxing Heavyweight

Tyson Fury has warned Anthony Joshua that it would be unwise for him to take on former opponent, Daniel Dubois, in another fight as he would come up short again

Anthony Joshua was knocked out inside five rounds by his compatriot last September in an IBF heavyweight title showdown at Wembley Stadium. While AJ does not have another fight officially lined up at the moment, he is keen to get back in the ring soon and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, is hoping to lock down a rematch agreement with Dubois for later in 2025

Hearn has also expressed the idea of Joshua potentially taking on Fury, Joseph Parker, Deontay Wilder or Agit Kabayel. Due to Joshua wanting to avenge his devastating loss to Dubois, a rematch with the IBF heavyweight holder is presumably deemed the biggest priority

Tyson Fury Doesn’t Think Joshua Can Win Heavyweight Fight

However, despite Joshua and Hearn’s eagerness to set up a second contest with Dubois, and the belief that the result could go the other way if the pair met again, Fury is adamant that matters would remain the same in a rematch. When asked on The Stomping Ground whether Joshua could beat Dubois in a second contest, the former heavyweight world champion simply replied: “No. I don’t think he can.”

The former world champion then questioned whether a second fight between his two compatriots would even go ahead, commenting: “I don’t even think he (Joshua) will take a rematch.”

Joshua has avenged a loss before, however, as he followed up a shocking stoppage loss to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019 by defeating him on points in a rematch. The former heavyweight champion was unable to pull off the same feat, though, against Oleksandr Usyk, as he lost both fights on points to the Ukrainian.

What Next in the Heavyweight Division

Dubois is eyeing his next fight, while AJ still doesn’t know what is next either

Dubois was set to defend his IBF belt against Parker a fortnight ago in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the undercard of the Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol rematch. However, sickness caused the Brit to pull out of the contest just days before the scheduled fight, and he was replaced by Martin Bakole. The Congolese boxer took the fight at very short notice, and his lack of preparation showed as he was stopped in the second round by the New Zealander.

Dubois and his promoter, Frank Warren, are likely looking beyond Joshua and hoping to schedule an undisputed fight with Usyk, as the Ukrainian kept hold of the remaining heavyweight belts after beating Fury for a second time last December. Usyk already got the better of Dubois when the two fought in 2023, but the Brit has grown as a fighter since then and would be much more confident in his chances if another fight occurred.

This places Joshua in a tough position to get another world title shot and become a three-time heavyweight champion anytime soon.

While there is still a desire from Joshua, Hearn, and plenty of boxing fans to see Joshua and Fury finally battle it out in the ring one day, the chances remain low for the time being after the latter announced a sudden retirement from boxing at the start of the year. However, Fury’s latest decision has not convinced those involved in boxing that he is actually retired as he has made similar announcements in the past.

“Only The Ring can judge” Joseph Parker Says He Has No Doubt Who Wins Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder After Facing Both

Joseph Parker is one of only a few men to have fought both Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua.

Some of the other names include Dominic Breazeale and Robert Helenius. American puncher Wilder knocked out both of those men inside the first round, and knocked out all of his opponents until he came up against Tyson Fury

Across three fights, he drew one, then was stopped in the next two and since then has taken two more losses. One was against Parker on points in December 2023, and the other was by KO against Zhilei Zhang back in June 2024.

He has not fought since, though there has been plenty of speculation he will be returning to the ring. Former two-time world champion Joshua is often mentioned as a possible opponent for what would be a blockbuster fight despite the fact that both men are now towards the end of their careers.

Anthony Joshua is coming off a loss against Daniel Dubois, who knocked him out inside five rounds back in September to retain his IBF belt.

He was due to defend it in February against former WBO ruler Parker, but fell ill at the last minute and was withdrawn. so Parker instead took on Martin Bakole and stopped him in the second round.

Speaking to Mail Sport Boxing, the New Zealander was asked who would win if ‘AJ’ and ‘The Bronze Bomber’ were to fight one another now.

“Anthony Joshua.”

The fight would likely represent a final chance to get back to the top of the sport for either man, so even without a belt on the line it would be a much anticipated contest between two of this era’s most entertaining fighters.

However, it has now been suggested that Joshua could instead be going into a rematch with Dubois.

Francis Ngannou vs. Deontay Wilder: Wilder Return: Malik Scott Talks Potential Francis Ngannou Fight and Shares His Candid Take

Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) was once one of the most feared heavyweights in the world, prior to his gruelling trilogy with Tyson Fury. Since the conclusion of those intense battles, Wilder has secured only one victory—a brutal first-round stoppage over Robert Helenius. After two losses on Riyadh Season cards, “The Bronze Bomber” has been linked with a return to the ring. Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scott, recently spoke to SpaceportSweden.com, offering insight into a potential return and a possible matchup with UFC legend

Deontay Wilder Return: Malik Scott Talks Potential Francis Ngannou Fight

Malik Scott Discusses Wilder Comeback

Wilder has appeared twice on Riyadh Season cards, losing to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, leading many to write off “The Bronze Bomber.” Despite the doubters, his trainer Malik Scott believes he will make a comeback:

Fighting is in Deontay’s heart. He’ll fight again. Deontay will fight again. He just moves on his own terms and does things how he wants to do them. Especially when it comes to the business aspect of things because like I said he doesn’t need this, so he ain’t going to do it if all the terms are not right.

“He’s still Deontay Wilder. He’s still big time boxing and people still want to see him. He’ll fight again.

Wilder vs Ngannou

When asked if Wilder knocks out Ngannou, Scott said: “If we get to go against him he is going to get to feel the wrath of Deontay Wilder because the closest thing he felt to it was AJ. But AJ and Wilder power is different. So if he thinks AJ can hit him with his best shot and hurt him, imagine if Deontay Wilder hit him with his best shot. He goes to sleep, just like he did with Anthony Joshua.

“We’d put it together and Deontay would go in there and be himself. And if Deontay gets to him the same way AJ got to him, then he’ll be knocked out again,” said Malik Scott about Wilder-Ngannou.

I don’t Doubt Johnny Nelson says he Has No Doubt Who Would Win A Deontay Wilder vs Anthony Joshua Fight

Anthony Joshua is looking for his comeback opponent and Johnny Nelson has a view on what would happen if it were to be Deontay Wilder.

Both of these former heavyweight world champions are in the autumn of their careers. Wilder was a long-ruling WBC belt holder who, until he faced Tyson Fury, had knocked out every man put in front of him in the ring

Fury drew with the American in their first fight, then knocked him out in two further contests. Since then Wilder has also been beaten twice more, once on points by Joseph Parker, and once by KO by Zhilei Zhang. Although a return has been rumoured for almost a year, nothing has yet materialised.

Joshua is in a similar position. He was beaten twice in back-to-back fights by Oleksandr Usyk, the first in 2021 which left him without any of his belts, and the second was a rematch a year later that went the same way and ended with another points loss for ‘AJ’.

After rebuilding with four wins over the likes of Otto Wallin and Francis Ngganou, Joshua had another shot at a world title against Daniel Dubois last September. However, he was stopped inside five rounds and hasn’t fought since.

Speaking to Daily Mail Sport in a round of winner stays on, Nelson was asked to pick between Joshua and Wilder and didn’t hesitate to name his winner.

“Anthony Joshua.”

Many hoped that Joshua and Fury would finally get it on this year but Fury’s retirement back in January put an end to that, at least for now.

“If He Gets Knocked Out” – Francis Ngannou Gets a Bitter Reminder on Eyeing Deontay Wilder Boxing Fight

Francis Ngannou with Renan Ferreira’s consciousness still clinging to his knuckles, is already hunting new prey. The PFL Super Fight heavyweight champion has locked his predatory gaze on boxing’s knockout artist, Deontay Wilder. “I will do boxing next,” Ngannou whispered to Sportsbook Review with the casual menace of a man who traffics in unconsciousness. “[I’m passionate about fighting Deontay Wilder] because there’s an 80 percent chance that somebody will go to sleep.”

This isn’t just another fight—it’s a collision of nuclear arsenals. Two men whose right hands should require permits from the Department of Energy, both seeking to erase recent setbacks from combat sports’ collective memory. The Cameroonian’s boxing expedition—born from the still-smoldering ashes of his UFC exodus—has yielded a highlight reel as volatile as his fists. Fans will remember the night when the former UFC heavyweight king registered his name in boxing’s aristocracy list by sending Tyson Fury to the canvas. However, the Anthony Joshua fight ended was his own violent introduction to the canvas. So, what are Ngannou’s chances against a concussive juggernaut like Wilder? UFC veteran Brendan Schaub believes Ngannou “has a better opportunity to win.”

However, Schaub still considers Ngannou the underdog. “Deontay’s been in there, he’s just a pure boxer. His heavyweight run, which is over, but his heavyweight run is one of the greatest of all time. One of my favorite fighters of all time. Absolutely adore Deontay Wilder, worked with him many times, love the dude. Francis would still be an underdog in that fight, not as much as with Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua, but he has a way better shot of winning this fight than Tyson or Anthony Joshua.”

RELATED : Anthony Joshua is under pressure as Tyson Fury’s possible return looms….

Schaub’s take holds merit. Since turning pro in 2008, the Alabama native has established himself as one of boxing’s most dangerous heavyweights. From 2015 to 2020, he reigned as the WBC heavyweight champion, becoming the first American to claim the title since 2007. Over 48 career bouts, he has secured 43 victories—42 by knockout—earning him the chilling nickname “Dr. Sleep.” His raw power is undeniable, with 20 of those knockouts coming in the very first round. With a staggering 97.67% knockout rate, the highest in heavyweight history, Deontay Wilder poses a serious threat to the Cameroonian.

But behind these moments lies the tale of a man who dared challenge Rome itself. When Dana White presented golden handcuffs disguised as a UFC contract, Ngannou did the unthinkable—he walked away from the heavyweight throne, demanding revolutionary concessions: fair pay, healthcare, and the freedom to box. The emperor refused. The champion left. Now, as Ngannou stalks the ‘Bronze Bomber’ from across combat sports’ divided kingdom, one truth becomes clear: some predators refuse to be caged, even in an Octagon. However, a UFC veteran recently voiced concerns about Francis Ngannou’s chances.

Daniel Cormier voices his concerns about the “lost” Francis Ngannou

“I get to have a good four-fight plan in boxing,” Francis Ngannou stated during his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience last year. “I think that could be good. You know, you get like a good four fights, and then you build, like, know who and who should be next. That could be my potential retirement plan.”

For MMA fighters, transitioning to boxing has proven to be a financial jackpot, offering significantly larger paydays than mixed martial arts. This shift gained traction in 2017 when Conor McGregor stepped into the ring against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in what became the most lucrative crossover fight in combat sports history—a “red pa–y night” every fighter dreams of. Now 38, Ngannou understands the financial potential boxing presents. With only a few years left before retirement, he focuses on capitalizing on every opportunity. His return to the boxing ring aligns with that goal, as he now prepares to face Deontay Wilder, famously known as “Dr. Sleep.”

Daniel dubois

However, former UFC champion Daniel Cormier has raised concerns over ‘The Predator’s decision to return to boxing against Deontay Wilder, pointing to his previous performances against Fury and Anthony Joshua“Sure, he’s going to make a boatload of money—he always does—but at what point do you stop and say, ‘I don’t know?’ Because to me, it seems like he’s up against it again. Maybe he truly is the biggest, baddest man on the planet, and he doesn’t care about the odds. Maybe he just wants to prove everyone wrong, like he did the first time when he fought Tyson Fury and took him to a very close fight,” Cormier remarked.

What do you think of Brendan Schaub’s comments? Do you believe Deontay Wilder might present a smaller challenge to Francis Ngannou compared to Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua? Share your thoughts below.
