‘Gravy train has passed’ – Derek Chisora explains U-turn on Francis Ngannou showdown for Oleksandr Usyk fight

Derek Chisora no longer wants to step into the ring with Francis Ngannou.

Derek Chisora secured the 36th victory of his 49-fight boxing career on Saturday, surviving a nasty cut to drop Otto Wallin twice en route to a unanimous decision win.

‘Del Boy’ forced Wallin onto his heels for the majority of their Manchester bout and was the only one who landed any truly eye-catching punches.

Ahead of the fight, Chisora had mentioned former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou as one stunning option for his boxing farewell.

The 41-year-old also told talkSPORT in November that he was trying to push for a fight with the Cameroonian in Africa.

However, as he gears up for the last dance of his renowned boxing career, it seems Chisora’s mindset has shifted and he is now purely focused on one man.

“I think that the Choo Choo train has passed now,” Chisora told talkSPORT.com, speaking on a potential fight with Ngannou.

“The hype for me fighting him has died down,” he added. “Put it this way, AJ [Anthony Joshua] fighting Francis Ngannou is the same as Canelo [Alvarez] fighting Jake Paul.

“Do you understand? So I think that the gravy train for Francis Ngannou in boxing and trying it doesn’t work.”

YouTuber-turned-professional boxer Jake Paul was eyeing another big outing against Canelo Alvarez following his bout with heavyweight legend Mike Tyson last November.

Paul, incredibly, looked to have agreed a deal to face 168-pounds world champion Alvarez in May, but the fight was denounced by Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh.

Like Paul, Ngannou made his presence known in the boxing world with a blockbuster clash against a heavyweight icon.

It is believed ‘The Predator’ had a dispute with UFC President Dana White over his contract before deciding to leave the promotion as their heavyweight champion.

Ngannou’s professional boxing debut came against none other than Tyson Fury, who claimed a razor-thin split-decision victory in their 2023 Saudi Arabia clash, despite being shockingly knocked down in the third round.

Five months later, Ngannou fought Anthony Joshua, but the result painted a completely different picture for the former’s future boxing career, as he was knocked out in the second round.

Joshua was then defeated by Daniel Dubois at Wembley, which meant he was ruled out to face the winner of the highly anticipated Fury vs Usyk rematch.

Chisora has now named Ukraine’s 38-year-old unified heavyweight champion Usyk, who holds the WBA (Super), WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight championships to his name, as the man he wants for his last-ever fight.

oleksandr usyk

Usyk beat Chisora via unanimous decision when the pair met at Wembley Arena in October 2020.

The Ukrainian named Chisora as the toughest opponent of his boxing career in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT this week.

“I’m not going to say [Usyk]. I’m manifesting it. I’m asking God for the opportunity.

“I’ve said to Frank [Warren], you know, now Oleksandr Usyk has to phone his boss and ask his boss if he can fight me.

“But that’s the fight I want.”

Although Chisora doesn’t fancy taking a fight in the octagon anytime soon, he believes there needs a boxing representative in the UFC soon.

“Let me tell you something. Boxers are the biggest as p****** for getting kicked in the knees and shins.

“We ain’t going there boy. It’s hard enough already to get hit in the face but we’re going to be p****** and say you know what?

“Keep your cage. We don’t want to know it.”

Dubois defends his IBF heavyweight title against Joseph Parker later this month, with Usyk expected to face the winner.

Derek Chisora wants ‘blockbuster’ fight for No. 50 as he lines up Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk or Daniel Dubois

Derek Chisora was an emphatic winner on Saturday night as he clinched a dominant win over Otto Wallin at ‘The Last Dance’ in Manchester. That unanimous victory earned him the chance to challenge for the IBF heavyweight championship against Daniel Dubois, but he also put forward both Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua as potential opponents. Promoter Frank Warren would not rule out any opponent.

Derek Chisora said he was “crying like a baby” ahead of his 49th fight but is aiming for a “blockbuster” against Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk or Daniel Dubois.
Saturday night in Manchester saw Chisora win the IBF heavyweight eliminator against Otto Wallin, which could potentially put him on course for an encounter with Dubois in the summer, assuming the champion defeats Joseph Parker on February 22.
Speaking to TNT Sports after his victory, Chisora reflected on his victory on points.
He said: “Otto Wallin was a good fighter. I thought he was going to gas out, but he didn’t, and he proved me wrong. When I arrived, I said to myself, I won’t cry. I started crying like a baby. I was in tears because I love the sport and I love the fans… the ups and downs. It was a very emotional day.
“It was a hard fight. It was very hard when I got the cut and something happened in the third round that I didn’t tell my trainers.”
Discussing his achievements so far, he added: “Legacy, it’s made by the fans. I think I’ll be in the Hall of Fame when I’m dead, not now. I love it.”

Chisora then called up a trio of British musicians; Skepta, Lethal Bizzle and Tinie Tempah, and asked each of them to hold a picture of Joshua, Dubois and Usyk to gauge the crowd’s favourite choice for his 50th fight.
The cheers rang out loudest for Joshua, and Chisora answered: “I think I’ve earned No. 50, a big blockbuster, please.”
Chisora’s promoter, Frank Warren, was open to giving his charge any fight he wanted.
He said: “The one he wants, we’ll make it happen. He has now won an eliminator for the IBF title. That’s Daniel Dubois, that’s in the bag.
“We’ll sit down and whatever he wants to do, he will do. His 50th fight, he deserves it.”

My power gave Tyson Fury horror cut and 47 stitches – now I want to spoil Derek Chisora’s retirement plan

Otto Wallin nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the decade against Tyson Fury six years ago.

The Swedish giant was drafted in as a tune-up opponent for Tyson Fury – then an unbeaten heavyweight – in 2019 ahead of his much-anticipated rematch with Deontay Wilder.

In his previous outing, Fury had made quick work of Tom Schwarz inside two rounds, and Wallin was expected to fall to the same fate.

But the tricky southpaw proved to be a much sterner test than most had anticipated.

In the third round, Wallin opened a deep gash above Fury’s right eye with a cuffing blow that painted the Brit’s chest red.

As the fight wore on, the cut got worse and worse while Wallin targeted the wound.

Wallin used every trick in the book, including rubbing his glove on Fury’s cut, to deepen the laceration.

But some brilliant work from Fury’s cutman Jorge Capetillo kept Fury in the fight.

There were tense moments in the sixth stanza when the doctor examined his eye, and there were genuine fears that a medical stoppage could end Fury’s undefeated record six years before Oleksandr Usyk would achieve that very feat.

Yet Fury held on for a unanimous decision win, although he later required 47 stitches and plastic surgery due to the damage inflicted.

Speaking to talkSPORT in 2022, Wallin said: “I gave [Fury] his toughest fight of his career.

“Wilder knocked him down a few times, but no one has been able to match his skills like I did

“I landed more punches than anybody has done on him. I landed more punches than Wilder in the first fight and [Wladimir] Klitschko together.

“So, that’s a big statement in itself and of course, I can beat him, I know that and I think he knows that too, that’s why he never mentions my name anymore.”

Wallin’s stock rose tenfold from the performance, with the Swede later going on to earn himself a top 10 place in Ring Magazine heavyweight rankings after stringing together an impressive six-fight winning streak.

However, his position in the standings came crashing down when Anthony Joshua retired him on his stool at the end of the fifth round in December 2023.

But on Saturday night, he is back under the bright lights for more big-time boxing against Derek Chisora at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester.

Wallin wasn’t the first choice to face Chisora, with a bout against Jarrel Miller initially scheduled until it was called off due to a contractual dispute.

It is being billed as ‘Last Dance’ by Queensberry Promotions but Chisora is expected to have one final bow abroad before he calls time on his long and punishing career.

Providing Chisora comes through the contest unscathed, the 41-year-old is hoping to land a high-profile match-up with either Francis Ngannou in Africa or a trilogy with Dillian Whyte.

But a loss to Wallin could throw a spanner in the works.

“My Money’s On Him” Derek Chisora Makes His Final Prediction For Daniel Dubois vs Joseph Parker: “My Money’s On Him”

Derek Chisora has tasted the punches of Joseph Parker and has now made a prediction ahead of his fight with Daniel Dubois.

‘Del Boy’ is just weeks away from his 49th fight, and it comes against former Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua opponent, Otto Wallin. Back in 2021, the British heavyweight veteran fought Parker twice

On their first meeting in May, Chisora lost by split decision after a close and entertaining battle across 12 rounds in which he scored a knockdown in the first round. Then, in September that year, the pair went at it again and this time Parker won wider, knocking down Chisora three times and taking a unanimous decision.

Since then Parker, a former WBO champion who lost his title to Anthony Joshua in 2018, has continued to climb up the ranks despite losing to Joe Joyce in 2022. He has beaten the likes of Jack Massey, Simon Kean, Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang to set up this IBF world title shot against current ruler Dubois.

Dubois has also put together a super run of wins – his last three victories have all come by way of stoppage over Jarrell Miller, Fillip Hrgovic and Joshua.

The pair square off on February 22 and Chisora has told Seconds Out he expects the younger man to win.

“My money is on Daniel. I believe he has got everything to stop Joseph Parker because he’s strong and he wants it more. He’s on a roll right now. There is nothing that can stop him right now.”

The winner of this fight will be well-placed to challenge unified heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk in an undisputed fight sometime later this year.
