A win this weekend for Isaac Cruz could prove huge for the “Pitbull”.

It hasn’t been too long since Gervonta Davis‘ last fight, but the boxing world wants to know what “Tank” is going to do next. Another show-stopping knockout victory, this time against Frank Martin, once again proved that Davis is arguably the most dangerous fighter on the planet.

That would generally make it difficult to find him a willing opponent, although Shakur Stevenson continues to claim that he’s fully ready to negotiate and get the possible mega-fight done. There are still plenty of obstacles to clear for that to happen, which could pave way for others to enter the fray.

Isaac Cruz vs Tank Davis rematch coming in November?

According to the VP of Communications at Haymon Sports, who lead Davis’ promotion company PBC, Isaac Cruz could find himself in a rematch with Davis later this year.

I think Tank’s date is November. I guess that’s a possibility if Pitbull comes through his fight unscathed. The timing works out… I would like to see him in a rematch. I would really like to see him and Pitbull go at it again, with Tank not having a hand injury or anything like that. I thought it was one of his toughest fights. Just to see how that would be with him at full strength.”

Gervonta Davis is 30-0 with 28 knockouts, and he really doesn’t have much else to prove. He’s one of the most dangerous fighters in the sport, which makes it tough for him to find willing high-profile opponents.

Despite that, he’s been able to secure and then knock out two top names consecutively in Ryan Garcia and Frank Martin.

Now, the key for Tank is to find a way to become undisputed. It’s a tough path to go on considering he only has the WBA belt and the other three major world titles belong to three different fighters.

Step one would be to unify, and that’s exactly what Eddie Hearn is sure Davis will do next.

With IBF champion Vasiliy Lomachenko taking some time to himself and Denys Berinchyk not a big enough name yet, there’s only one option for Tank in Hearn’s eyes: Shakur Stevenson.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tank against Shakur because: situations and circumstances are everything. Tank’s got all his eggs in his basket for a Lomachenko fight, then that falls through. You’re really left holding your d**k at that point going: ‘Who am I gonna fight?’ Boom, Shakur’s a free agent, he’s ready to do a deal. Timing’s everything.

Hearn also spoke briefly about potentially signing Stevenson to Matchroom, but he said everything is up in the air at this point. The promoter isn’t sure if Stevenson truly needs him, but if he does, Hearn would be more than willing to work with him.

He says that with or without him, he hopes Stevenson “can make the fights that define his legacy“.

The collision course Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson have been on since rising through the ranks may just be ready to reach its end.

The two Americans are now champions in the lightweight division, both yet to be defeated and considered to be amongst the elite in the sport of boxing.

Fans have debated if the defensive skill of Stevenson can trump ‘Tank’s devastating power for some years now and, since Vasiliy Lomachenko recently pulled out of talks with the hard-hitting Baltimore boxer, they may find out soon.

World-class trainer Robert Garcia – who corners pound-for-pound star Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez among others – recently told FightHype that he felt Davis was unbeatable at 135.

“He’s unbelievable man. I think ‘Tank’ at this point is unbeatable at the lightweight division against any of the world champions. I think he’s the top guy right now in that division, he had a great performance. He has the timing, power, accuracy, everything is great man. He’s a perfect fighter right now.”

His latest prediction on the fight with ES News – which comes just one month later – makes it a pick ’em and he highlights the skills of Shakur as to why.

“It’s a good fight, man, cause Shakur fights really good on the outside, very smart. I think it will be a very difficult fight for both. Right [it’s very hard to beat Shakur.]”

There are likely many in and around the sport who are going back and forth on this one, so it’s a good thing there’s a ‘huge chance’ of it being made, that is according to Davis’ co-trainer Kenny Ellis, who says the only way it doesn’t happen is ‘fear’ on Stevenson’s part

Gervonta Davis is moving on from Vasyl Lomachenko.

The pair were deep in negotiations to square off this year in a WBA and IBF lightweight world title unification clash.

It is understood that talks between Bob Arum’s Top Rank (who promote Lomachenko) and Al Haymon’s PBC (who represent Davis) were progressing well for a November fight date.

However, the Ukrainian slickster has opted to take some time out of boxing and won’t return to the ring until 2025.

Davis’ team was understandably taken aback by Lomachenko’s response, who has always sought the biggest fights possible during his 21-fight (18-3) pro career.

But instead of sitting around and waiting for Loma, Davis’ co-trainer Kenny Ellis has indicated that they may target a fight with WBC champion Shakur Stevenson next.

Speaking to Mill City Boxing, he said: “He [Loma] is straight ducking… Hopefully, Shakur won’t duck.

“They keep saying that Tank is ducking Shakur, let’s see. Him and Lomachenko are the only ones left.”

Asked what Davis would do if a fight with Stevenson or Lomachenko can’t be made by next year, Ellis added: “It’s up to Tank and what he wants to do but he might retire.

“If he does I support that, whatever he does I’ll support it. If he said let’s get the next one, I’ll support it.”

This comes after Lomachenko’s manager told boxing reporter Steve Kim: “Loma is not in the mood right now.

“He doesn’t have the motivation at the moment. He’s taking off, he wants to spend more time with the family.

“He doesn’t want to do anything until the end of the year. So he’s definitely not coming to the ring until the end of the year…

“With Loma, just money is not what motivates him. He doesn’t take anything just because of money.

“You can offer him millions, tens of millions of dollars – if he doesn’t have motivation, he’s not ready to prepare for the fight.”

Besides Stevenson, William Zepeda and a rematch with Isaac Cruz are also said to be potential options for Davis.

However, Zepeda – who is currently ranked No.1 by all four major sanctioning bodies at 135lbs – is expected to go down the WBO route and challenge their champion Denis Berinchyk next.

Gervonta Davis is one of the most ferocious champions in the sport of boxing having knocked out all but two of his 30 opponents.

Now WBA Lightweight World Champion, ‘Tank’ from Baltimore made his first defence of the belt with a knockout win over previously undefeated Frank Martin.

In his typical fashion of giving away a few rounds to lure his opponent in, the 29-year-old found his opportunity in the eighth to lay fellow southpaw Martin flat on his back.

He is one of four champions in the 135 ranks, joined by Shakur Stevenson, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Denys Berinchyk.

In an interview with The Only Kayla, two-weight undisputed champion Claressa Shields defended Stevenson for hitting back at criticism he has received due to his last two performances. In doing so, she named his as the only fighter who has a chance against Gervonta Davis.

“This boy got three-time division world champion, silver medal at the Olympics, one of the best fighters in the world right now. The only threat to Tank Davis right now is Shakur. And you just told this man he’s a s**t fighter.

He spends every day in the gym trying to get better and be a great fighter. You can say that to him, but when he comes back to you and says something now you’re hurt and sad.”

One of the most sought after fights in the sport, Davis-Stevenson became more realistic this week.

‘Tank’ was previously in early talks with another champion in Vasiliy Lomachenko but the Ukrainian has decided he is not currently motivated enough to take the fight.

That leaves the door open for Shakur, who recently became a free agent, to step in and negotiate the fight all boxing fans want to see.

Word from the camps recently was that Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko were getting set for a lightweight unification bout.

The teams of the two champions – Davis the WBA and Lomachenko the IBF – had carried out initial talks that were reportedly going to ramp up this week. That was until the Ukrainian’s manager, Egis Klimas, told Steve Kim that his man ‘was not in the mood to fight.’

“Loma is not in the mood right now, he doesn’t have the motivation at the moment. He’s taking off, he wants to spend more time with the family. He doesn’t want to do anything till the end of the year.

Despite the target date for the bout being November this year, making it still plausible, the negativity of the statement suggests talks are either off or on hold. ‘Tank’s team are certainly taking it that way.

Speaking on Instagram, co-trainer Kenny Ellis said ‘Loma’ ‘is done’ if he decides against the fight.

“If Lomachenko can’t get motivated by getting a chance at being the face of boxing his team need to hang his gloves to where he can never reach them again. He’s done.”

If negotiations have indeed collapsed, fans will look for Davis to face WBC Champion Shakur Stevenson instead – a fight both men have said can happen and one that’s more intriguing to most.

Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko look to be heading towards an intriguing two-belt lightweight clash.

When Devin Haney vacated all four titles in the division Lomachenko picked up the vacant IBF strap with a win over George Kambosos Jr. ‘Tank’ Davis was automatically elevated by the WBA to Full Champion and sealed that status with an impressive knockout over previously-undefeated Frank Martin.

All is now set for the unification, which has been confirmed as in talks by ‘Loma’s promoter Bob Arum.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, esteemed trainer Robert Garcia said his prediction would be very different five years ago.

“I think five or six years ago I would pick Lomachenko right away. Right now it might be too hard. I think at his age and his size, because he’s not that big of a lightweight, I think I have to favour Tank. His power is just unbelievable.”

Garcia – who currently trains pound-for-pound star Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez among others – praised the Ukrainian but ultimately couldn’t look by the extreme power of Davis which has put away 28 of 30 opponents so far.

“Loma’s got great skills man. Loma’s the one that will not be afraid of him. Loma’s the one that will be in great shape. If he knows how to win the first few rounds and then fights smart the rest of the fight then there’s a chance he could pull it off. He’s a very smart man, but I just think Tank’s power is too much.

Loma’s so skilful, man, that he could do it for twelve rounds, but when you have someone like Tank in front of you, it’s not gonna be easy. It won’t be easy.”

Talks are set to continue for the 135 unification with a date pencilled in for November. The winner will be expected to move straight into another championship clash with Shakur Stevenson.
