May 3, 2025 – Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Martin Bakole vs. Efe Ajagba: African Heavyweight Showdown Set for May 3, 2025

The heavyweight division is set for fireworks on May 3, 2025, as Martin Bakole squares off against Efe Ajagba in what’s being billed as the “King of Africa” heavyweight showdown. The highly anticipated bout will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and promises to be one of the most explosive matchups of the year.

Two Heavyweight Giants on a Collision Course

Martin Bakole, the Congolese powerhouse, has built an impressive reputation as a skilled, heavy-handed contender. Known for his high boxing IQ, surprising speed, and durability, Bakole is eager to stake his claim for a world title shot by taking on Nigeria’s own knockout artist, Efe Ajagba.

Ajagba, a former Olympian and one of the hardest punchers in the division, is riding a wave of momentum following back-to-back wins, including a statement knockout against Joe Goodall in 2024. The Nigerian is known for his intimidating reach, natural athleticism, and explosive right hand.

Why Bakole vs. Ajagba Matters

This clash is more than just another heavyweight contest. Both fighters represent the future of African boxing on the global stage. With the heavyweight scene dominated by names like Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk, and Anthony Joshua, this matchup offers a fresh and exciting narrative: two African titans battling for a spot in the world title conversation.

For Bakole, this is a crucial moment to prove that his technical approach and ring intelligence can neutralize Ajagba’s brute power. For Ajagba, this fight is a golden opportunity to silence critics who have questioned his defensive weaknesses and footwork.

Predictions: Power vs. Precision

Boxing analysts expect a high-stakes game of risk and reward. Bakole’s ability to box intelligently and avoid big shots will be put to the ultimate test against Ajagba’s early-round pressure. Should the fight extend into the later rounds, Bakole’s conditioning and tactical mindset may give him the edge.

Keys to Victory:

  • Martin Bakole: Control distance, target Ajagba’s body, and survive the early storm.

  • Efe Ajagba: Close the gap, apply power combinations, and avoid being outboxed.

  • What’s at Stake?

The winner of Bakole vs. Ajagba will not only earn global respect but also position themselves for a potential eliminator or world title shot by late 2025 or early 2026. Both camps understand the magnitude of this fight — one punch could reshape the heavyweight rankings overnight.

Parker vs Bakole – R1 Joseph Parker Brutally going harder on Martin Bakole LIVE RESULTS

An almost comically static start from Bakole who isn’t on his toes and is just standing waiting for Parker to come forward.

The Kiwi isn’t quite prepared to do that in this first round and is content to fire out a couple of jabs.

Not much action or landing so far as the two massive fighters size each other up.

Parker definitely looks better, though, as he fires off a decent one-two in the final minute of the round.

Bakole finally makes his move inside the final 20 seconds and lands a massive shot to end the round!

Well, that certainly will have woken Parker up!

Here they come

Martin Bakole is first to the ring as he arrives draped in the Congolese flag and a plain black t-shirt.

Then comes Joseph Parker – at the heaviest weight of his career – in a red gown with a glittery hoodie.

This is an absolutely top quality heavyweight fight and, remember, an eliminator for the WBO title, currently held by Oleksandr Usyk.

Joseph Parker spoke in the ring and pleaded his case for a world title next.

He was meant to fight Daniel Dubois for the IBF title tonight and he is still the WBO mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk.

As one of the most in-form heavyweights in boxing, he thoroughly deserves a title shot next.

Parker said: “Martin Bakole thanks for accepting the challenge and flying all the way here.

“I listened, stayed calm, structured composed and got the victory.

“I want to fight for the world title next.

“We’ve got Frank [Warren] here… I want a world title next.

“When I came back to the corner, Andy [Lee] gave me instructions to be patient, when he comes in throw the overhand right.”

Asked if he would prefer to fight Usyk or Dubois, Parker said: “I will fight anyone and everyone.”

CURRENT LIVE RESULTS: Joseph Parker vs Martin Bakole Huge fight ON NOW as Parker faces tricky Dubois replacement – updates

JOSEPH PARKER is facing Martin Bakole RIGHT NOW in a huge heavyweight bout in Saudi Arabia!

Joseph Parker was due to face Daniel Dubois for DDD’s IBF world title, but the British champion withdrew from the fight on Thursday due to illness.

In stepped Bakole in his place, who will be looking to seize his opportunity on tonight’s blockbuster Artur Beterbiv vs Dmitry Bivol card in Riyadh.

The pair will battle for Parker’s WBO interim world title, with the winner of the bout becoming the WBO mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the full title.

Quick night’s work

Well that didn’t last long at all – 5mins and 17 seconds in total.

Should various reports on the internet be believed then Bakole earned around $600,000 for his short trip to Saudi Arabia.

He took a massive shot but it was a no-lose situation for the Congolese star.

Nice work if you can get it.

Big shot rocks Bakole

It was a massive overhand right that sent Bakole tumbling.

It landed on the top of his big thick head and while Bakole didn’t tumble straight to the floor, his legs went like jelly and he went stumbling backwards.

“Sparring Is Different From Fighting” Dillian Whyte Predicts Anthony Joshua vs Martin Bakole

Anthony Joshua and Martin Bakole are frequently mentioned to co-star in a thrilling heavyweight clash.

Former two-time champion Joshua is currently looking for a comeback fight after suffering a big knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in his bid to get the belt for the third time. Whilst Bakole – who has been riding a wave since his KO over Jared Anderson last year – would be a dangerous choice, the Brit has made it clear that he will fight all comers

Speaking to IFL TV, former Joshua opponent Dillian Whyte disagreed with those saying the risk was all ‘AJ’s.

“I think that’s a great fight. Everyone says it’s dangerous fight for AJ but, me personally, I don’t think so. I think Bakole’s very confident. Confident from the sparring, confident from his last two, three performances. I think that works in AJ’s favour. I think he’s gonna walk to AJ with his hands down, try to fight AJ the same way he fought Jared Anderson. He’ll run into a big shot and get knocked out

“Anthony Joshua’s a big puncher. If you stand in front of AJ, he will knock you out. He won’t have to go and look for Bakole, Bakole’s gonna be right in front of him. AJ struggles with people with good boxing and movement.”

As for the infamous sparring sessions in which Bakole claims to have left Joshua on shaky legs, Whyte warned that those gym sessions play out very different than in the professional ring.

“You might be winning in sparring, but the fight’s different. In sparring you’ve got three or four sparring partners doing two rounds in, two rounds out. It’s you alone against three or four top heavyweights. A fight is me and you alone in there with 10 ounce gloves on for twelve rounds.

“AJ’s a big puncher. I’d actually pick AJ to win that fight … And AJ’s not my friend.”

Before the match-up can be discussed, Bakole has a final eliminator for the IBF mandatory slot in May against Efe Ajagba. Should he win, he will be in pole position to face champion Dubois

Now Eddie Hearn is scared to mention me, I wobbled Anthony Joshua’s ‘head and legs’ in sparring with huge shot

Martin Bakole has a unique story to tell from sparring British heavyweight Anthony Joshua.

Martin Bakole is considered by many to be the ‘most avoided’ heavyweight in the division, carrying dynamite in both hands and a really powerful style.

The Congolese KO artist has yet to receive his flowers at world level in a big-name fight, despite mixing it with some of the best in the gym including Daniel Dubois and current champion Oleksandr Usyk, who he claims he knocked out.

One fight Bakole has always had his eye on in the professional ranks is British star Joshua, whom he sparred while AJ trained in Sheffield under the stewardship of Rob McCracken.

And when giving insight into his time he has already shared in the ring with Joshua, Bakole claims he rocked Joshua with his trademark left hand.

“Eddie was ringside in the gym in Sheffield when I was sparring Anthony Joshua,” he told talkSPORT.

“And he knows and sees what I did to Anthony Joshua. That is to this day why he doesn’t mention me.

“When I first came to the gym, six or seven people came to spar him and I gave him a hard time.

“The next day they took everyone out except me and Agit Kabayel, I came to spar him but I was surprised I was asked to do six rounds.

“So my coach said ‘show him’, and I caught him with a beautiful left hand. It shook his head and shook his legs.

“Everyone went quiet in the gym, I used the left hook yeah and people saw it.”

Bakole and Joshua have naturally been thrust into a potential showdown, with an event in Africa regularly teased.

The pair came face-to-face recently and teased a showdown, but they are currently on very different trajectories.

The Congolese star is set to return in a world title eliminator with Efe Ajagba in May as he looks to put his name in the mix.

While Joshua wanted to face Tyson Fury next, but the showdown is in jeopardy with the ‘Gypsy King’ having retired from the sport.

But promoter Eddie Hearn named Bakole on a list of alternative opponent options for his planned return.

“We are going to fight again whatever,” Hearn told Seconds Out.

“It’s not like ‘Oh if Fury doesn’t fight us and we don’t get Dubois, we are retiring’.

“Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte, Martin Bakole, [winner of] Dubois vs Parker, [winner of] Zhilei Zhang against Agit Kabayel.”

‘It’s done’ Ben Shalom has revealed that a blockbuster clash between Martin Bakole and Anthony Joshua is ‘done’.

Shalom was in attendance for Adam Azim’s victory over Sergey Lipinets on Saturday night at OVO Arena Wembley.

Azim record his best victory to date by blasting out the Russian inside nine rounds to claim the the vacant IBO super lightweight title.

During the event, Shalom spoke with talkSPORT boxing pundit Spencer Oliver to discuss the fight, but ended up revealing some tasty fight news for another one of his clients.

“The promoter of Martin Bakole that’s what I want to be known as,” he told Oliver.

“The number one heavyweight in the world.”

Shalom proceeded to confirm that Bakole vs Joshua was a ‘done’ deal after the former asserted that he would fight AJ in Africa in the summer.

“It’s done. I’m hearing he’s signed and we’re off to the Congo,” Shalom said.

Anthony Joshua and Bakole, 31, have been naturally thrust into a potential showdown ever since Tyson Fury announced in January that he was retiring from the sport.

Bakole, who boasts a record of 21-1 with 16 KOs, is considered by many to be the ‘most avoided’ heavyweight in the division.

However, the Congolese knockout artist has yet to receive his flowers on the world stage in a big-name bout.

This comes despite Bakole locking horns with some of the best in the gym, including Daniel Dubois and current champion Oleksandr Usyk, who he claims he knocked out.

One fight Bakole has always had his eye on in the professional ranks is British star Joshua, 35, whom he sparred while ‘AJ’ trained in Sheffield.

“I think he’ll come [back], yeah. I think so,” he said. “There is a big fight waiting for him in Africa.

“Outside the ring I keep working hard because my fight against him in Africa is a big fight.

“I think it will happen in the Congo…we need to fight in the same stadium and I think it’s going to be in Congo.

“It’s close and I will get that.”

Oliver was gleaming with a smile as he said: “Right boys. You’ve heard it here. The fight is happening in Africa in the summer.

“Anthony Joshua vs Martin Bakole.”

Bakole and Joshua came face-to-face recently and teased a showdown at The Ring Magazine awards in London, but they are currently on very different trajectories.

AJ hasn’t revealed a plan for his next outing in a planned comeback after being brutally stopped by Dubois in September.

But his promoter, Eddie Hearn, named Bakole on a list of alternative opponent options for his planned return.

Shalom was just 23-years-old when he launched a boxing promotional company from his flat in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.

He is Britain’s youngest ever licensed boxing promoter.

‘The all time Most Avoided Heavyweight’ Has Been Told By Turki Alalshikh That He Will Fight Anthony Joshua Next

Anthony Joshua may have found his next opponent.

‘Anthony Joshua’ suffered a shock fifth round knockout defeat against newly crowned IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium last September, but has confirmed he will be making a return to the sport this year

It was heavily speculated that the 35-year-old would be facing Tyson Fury next until ‘The Gypsy King’ announced his retirement from boxing at the beginning of January.

The man standing opposite Joshua in his next contest could have just been revealed though, after a heavyweight powerhouse claimed he has had his next fight confirmed by Turki Alalshikh.

Martin Bakole has picked up 21 wins in 22 professional contests, securing 16 knockout victories in the process and is on a run of three stoppages all inside six rounds. His last outing came in August when he blasted out highly rated American prospect Jared Anderson inside five rounds.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Bakole – who has picked up the tag of the most avoided man in the division – revealed he has been advised by Alalshikh that his next fight will come against two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in Africa.

“I love that fight, and I would like to say thank you to [His] Excellency because he’s behind this. He said ‘Martin we have a big fight in America, finish with [Efe] Ajagba and then Anthony Joshua is next in Africa.’

“Even I heard Anthony Joshua said he needs to fight in Africa, so all he need was a promoter or someone to promote that fight. Between me and him in Africa that will be a good fight.”

Martin Bakole has also secured impressive wins against Olympic gold medalist Tony Yoka in 2022 and Carlos Takam in 2023. His maiden career defeat came at the hands of Michael Hunter, who stopped him in the final round of their fight back in October 2018.

I will KO him in 3 Minutes, Heavyweight ‘Giant’ Accepts Call To Face Anthony Joshua And Vows To KO Him Inside 3 Minutes

Anthony Joshua is in the market for his next opponent.

The two-time world heavyweight champion is looking to bounce back from a knockout loss at the hands of Daniel Dubois. At 35-years-old, Joshua wants big fights and one last crack at holding a belt again

Turki Alalshikh of both Riyadh Season and the Ring Magazine spoke to TalkSPORT about ‘AJ’s next moves and said he would like to match him up with Congo’s Martin Bakole in Africa

“We are open to see Joshua also against Bakole. I want to see this fight right. I want to see it but you know where I want to see it. I want to see it in Africa.”

With the retirement of Tyson Fury and thus that fight being currently off the table, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn also recently mentioned Bakole as a potential opponent.

Responding to Alalshikh’s tentative plan, Bakole welcomed the fight.

“They keep avoiding me and I’m so happy, and I’d like to thank his His Excellency Turki Alalshikh because he said himself he wants to see this fight [with Anthony Joshua].”

First up for the ‘African Giant’ is Efe Ajagba in a final eliminator for the IBF’s mandatory spot to face champion Dubois. Bakole recently took issue with ‘AJ’ siding with Nigeria’s Ajagba in that bout, saying he would win in style before beating the Brit in one round.

Anthony joshua

“I want to fight you. Look at Daniel Dubois – I broke his nose twice [in sparring] and he knocked you out cold. I will knock you out in the first round. You’re talking about Ajagba? Ajagba is a baby, wait till you see how I’m going to knock him out. I invite you to be there. You’re talking s**t. I want to fight you. Stop talking nonsense. Now you’re in Nigeria you’re not British anymore. I’m African giant. After knocking Ajagba out I will knock you out as well.”

Bakole vs Ajagba takes place in May on the same card as Ryan Garcia against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero and Devin Haney up against Jose Ramirez.

The Race begins as Martin Bakole’s trainer surely ‘knows’ Anthony Joshua is ready to fight him

Although it is presumed that Martin Bakole will challenge Daniel Dubois, the IBF heavyweight titleholder, if Bakole gets past Efe Ajagba in an IBF eliminator in May, there are other possibilities, too.

For one, Dubois could come unstuck against Joseph Parker in a 50-50 fight on February 22 and lose his belt in the process. Secondly, even if Dubois does win that fight, it still won’t guarantee that he will defend his belt against Bakole anytime soon. Instead, Dubois may look to go directly to a unification fight against Oleksandr Usyk, with whom he has history. Or, if not that, he may decide to vacate the IBF belt altogether.

“Daniel Dubois won’t fight us,” Billy Nelson, Bakole’s coach, told BoxingScene. “I’ll tell you right now, I spoke to somebody at Queensberry Promotions in Saudi Arabia and they said to me: ‘I would advise Daniel not to fight Martin.’

“Martin schooled him in sparring. He is levels and levels above him. He has improved – of course he has. But do you think Martin Bakole hasn’t improved in those five or six years? Martin blows Daniel out of the water.”

Given a “three-fight plan” by Turki Alalshikh in Saudi Arabia, Bakole at least knows he will be busy in the coming months. He also has a backup plan should Dubois, as Nelson predicts, do all he can to avoid having to fight him.

This backup plan will require the cooperation of Anthony Joshua, as well as patience on the part of Bakole, 21-1 (16 KOs).

READ MORE : “I See Him In Control”: Kell Brook Has No Doubt Who Would Win Tyson Fury….

“No, I don’t think he will,” said Nelson when asked if he thinks Bakole will get his hands on a world heavyweight title this year. “I think the winner of Daniel and Joseph will fight Usyk, and we will fight Ajagba in New York and then Anthony Joshua in Africa – probably in the Congo.

“I know the Congolese government will fully support the fight going there, with the support of the Saudi Arabians. We can beat Anthony Joshua and fight for the world title after that. But you mark my words, if Daniel Dubois beats Parker and somehow beats Usyk and wins the unification, he will drop the IBF title rather than fight Martin Bakole.”

With Tyson Fury recently taking to his car to announce his latest retirement, the path back for Joshua no longer seems as clear or as obvious as it was a few weeks ago. Now he is suddenly without a big-name opponent with whom he can make a big pile of money and justify carrying on. Now he is having to think outside the box, get a little creative and consult the bucket list of things he might want to do before calling it quits.

One of these things, of course, is to fight in Africa.
Daniel dubois

“He is very interested,” said Nelson. “I mentioned the idea to him when they sparred years ago and I know he will take that fight. The bottom line is, it’s the biggest commercial fight for Anthony other than Fury. Daniel’s not going to fight him. He’s going to fight Usyk. But Anthony Joshua would earn massive money to go and fight in Africa. He’ll get more for that than he got for Dubois at Wembley, I’d say.”

As for whether Joshua would, like the rest, see Bakole as a risk not worth taking, Nelson suggests it is irrelevant at this stage of his career. “It doesn’t matter who he fights,” Nelson said. “With the fullest respect, the way Anthony is right now, all these fights we’re talking about are going to be tough for him: Dubois, Fury, Martin. He won’t be fighting Dubois or Fury, so there’s only Martin for him.”

“I Know His Weakness From Sparring” Martin Bakole Has No Doubt Who Wins Daniel Dubois vs Parker

Martin Bakole will be a keen observer when Daniel Dubois takes on Joseph Parker next month.

Parker and Dubois are two of the form men in the banner division. Dubois is the current IBF champion having been elevated after his knockout win over Fillip Hrgovic last June. That came just months after he also stopped the huge American Jarrell Miller in December 2023

Most recently, he knocked out Anthony Joshua in destructive fashion in September to retain his belt, and now he faces former WBO champion Parker on February 22.

Parker’s last two outings have been impressive points wins against big punchers – first, he beat Deontay Wilder in late 2023, then Zhilei Zhang in March last year.

The pair square off on a huge bill that is headlined by Artur Beterbiev‘s undisputed light heavyweight rematch with Dmitry Bivol.

One fighter who would love to face the winner of Dubois versus Parker is Bakole, the man who calls himself the most avoided heavyweight on the planet.

Speaking to talkSPORT Boxing, he was asked who he thinks will win.

“I think Joseph Parker. Daniel Dubois he can box, he did well against Joshua, he’s the champion, much respect to him, but Joseph Parker his level is above, his boxing brain, his movement. I think he will give him a hard time.”

He then backed himself to beat whoever comes out on top.

“I have sparred both of them and I know their weakness and I know how to knock them out.”

Bakole stopped Carlos Takam and highly touted American Jarod Anderson in his last two fights. Next up is a contest with Efe Ajagba for the right to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF belt.
