‘Boxing is a drug’ – Oleksandr Usyk finally reacts to Tyson Fury’s shock retirement

Oleksandr Usyk doubts Tyson Fury is retired for good.

‘The Gypsy King’ had boxing fans with their heads in their hands when he hung up his gloves for a fourth time last month.

Before taking to social media to drop the bombshell, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh was preparing an offer for the long-awaited all-British showdown between Fury and Anthony Joshua.

However, Fury’s decision has put those talks on ice.

Some believe he has merely stepped away from the sport as a way of negotiating a better deal for the AJ fight.

Others, like his promoter Frank Warren, think he will stick to his guns.

Usyk’s stance falls closer to the former line of thinking, although his reasoning is far deeper than just money.

“I don’t think about it but I think it is not true,” he told talkSPORT.com in an unprecedented exclusive interview on the London Eye.

“Once Tyson has relaxed, and rested, maybe Tyson will be back.

“Boxing if you do this for a long time: 10, 15, 20, 25 years then boxing is like a drug.

“If you don’t go to training one day then you feel dead. For me, at least.

“I train every day. I don’t do boxing every day. Sometimes I do crossfit, and running training.

“I only do boxing when I am in my camp.”

In many ways boxing is like a drug.

For several pugilists the biggest fight they face is coming to terms with retirement and their fractured lives after boxing.

When your entire existence has been based around the sport and the rigorous routine that comes with it, having that taken away overnight can be devastating to a fighter’s psyche.

So many great champions have fought on for too long; pulled back in by the allure of the bright lights.

Roy Jones Jr insisted at his peak that he would call time on his career before his inevitable decline yet the First Ballot Hall of Famer stepped between the ropes for a professional bout less than two years ago against former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at 54 years old.

Walking away from the sport has been equally difficult for Fury, who retired for the first time back in November 2013 following the breakdown of his fight with David Haye.

Three months later, he was back in the ring against Joey Abell before pulling off a monumental upset against Wladimir Klitschko for the unified WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight titles in 2015.

Following a three-year hiatus, Fury returned to action in June 2018.

A miraculous recovery saw him snatch the WBC heavyweight title away from Deontay Wilder in an epic trilogy before defending the belt by flattening Dillian Whyte in April 2022 and then retiring thereafter.

Once again, Fury was back in the ring before the year was out as he battered an ageing Derek Chisora from pillar to post in December 2022.

A crossover clash with Francis Ngannou followed before Oleksandr Usyk handed Fury the first blemishes on his professional record in consecutive fights in May 2024 and December 2024.

“Hi everybody, I’ll make this short and sweet, I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, I’ve loved every single minute of it,” he said in a video posted to Instagram.

“Hi everybody, I’ll make this short and sweet, I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, I’ve loved every single minute of it,” he said in a video posted to Instagram.

“I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, I’ll see you on the other side.”

Only he knows if it is for the long run this time.

Derek Chisora wants ‘blockbuster’ fight for No. 50 as he lines up Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk or Daniel Dubois

Derek Chisora was an emphatic winner on Saturday night as he clinched a dominant win over Otto Wallin at ‘The Last Dance’ in Manchester. That unanimous victory earned him the chance to challenge for the IBF heavyweight championship against Daniel Dubois, but he also put forward both Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua as potential opponents. Promoter Frank Warren would not rule out any opponent.

Derek Chisora said he was “crying like a baby” ahead of his 49th fight but is aiming for a “blockbuster” against Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk or Daniel Dubois.
Saturday night in Manchester saw Chisora win the IBF heavyweight eliminator against Otto Wallin, which could potentially put him on course for an encounter with Dubois in the summer, assuming the champion defeats Joseph Parker on February 22.
Speaking to TNT Sports after his victory, Chisora reflected on his victory on points.
He said: “Otto Wallin was a good fighter. I thought he was going to gas out, but he didn’t, and he proved me wrong. When I arrived, I said to myself, I won’t cry. I started crying like a baby. I was in tears because I love the sport and I love the fans… the ups and downs. It was a very emotional day.
“It was a hard fight. It was very hard when I got the cut and something happened in the third round that I didn’t tell my trainers.”
Discussing his achievements so far, he added: “Legacy, it’s made by the fans. I think I’ll be in the Hall of Fame when I’m dead, not now. I love it.”

Chisora then called up a trio of British musicians; Skepta, Lethal Bizzle and Tinie Tempah, and asked each of them to hold a picture of Joshua, Dubois and Usyk to gauge the crowd’s favourite choice for his 50th fight.
The cheers rang out loudest for Joshua, and Chisora answered: “I think I’ve earned No. 50, a big blockbuster, please.”
Chisora’s promoter, Frank Warren, was open to giving his charge any fight he wanted.
He said: “The one he wants, we’ll make it happen. He has now won an eliminator for the IBF title. That’s Daniel Dubois, that’s in the bag.
“We’ll sit down and whatever he wants to do, he will do. His 50th fight, he deserves it.”

“No One Wants To Fight Him”: Oleksandr Usyk Rules Out Facing ‘The Only Man Who Can Beat Him’

Oleksandr Usyk is considered by many to be the very best heavyweight on the planet right now.

Oleksandr Usyk has achieved what no other man has done before, and that is to become an undisputed champion in the four-belt era in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions

Although Evander Holyfield famously won all the belts in these two divisions, there were not as many on the line. It was his fight with Tyson Fury in May which saw Usyk add the WBC to his collection of IBF, WBA and WBO belts which he had taken off Anthony Joshua in 2021, and then defended in 2022.

A second fight with Fury in December, and another points win after 12 rounds, saw the Ukrainian southpaw once and for all confirm that he is the best big man on the planet despite, ironically, being smaller than most his peers in that division.

Many feel he could retire and leave a rich legacy behind, though the man himself has vowed that he will fight on.

One potential opponent is the top ranked heavyweight Martin Bakole, who says he is the only fighter who can defeat the great Ukrainian.

“Yes [I believe I’m the only man who can do it.] I will beat him easy, I will knock him out. I’m saying this not only because I spar him but I know how to stop southpaws. I learnt all my life, boxing my bother who’s southpaw, how to stop southpaws. All his movement, all that, I will stop that, I will knock him out.”

Speaking to Boxing King Media, Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk says former sparring partner Bakole will rule the division after Usyk but says they will not fight each other as Bakole has no belt.

“Please don’t forget Martin Bakole, he is a real threat to anyone. No one wants to fight him. After Usyk retires Martin Bakole will be the king of the division.

I think Oleksandr would not fight Martin Bakole for just one reason, Martin Bakole has no belt. Oleksandr would probably have the motivation when he comes back to boxing, he has to fight for something extraordinary, which is probably undisputed again.”

That means the only opponent for Usyk would be the winner of Daniel Dubois’ IBF world title defence against Joseph Parker on February 22.

Bakole fights in May for his shot to become mandatory for the belt, so may have more bargaining power if he wins and gets the fight

‘He doesn’t need to financially’ – Frank Warren reveals the only reason Tyson Fury would reverse retirement

Frank Warren insists Tyson Fury is ‘happy’ with life after boxing.

‘The Gypsy King’  left fans with their heads in their hands after retiring from the sport for a fourth time last month.

In doing so, he walked away from the long-awaited all-British showdown with Anthony Joshua while Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh was preparing an offer.

Several members of the boxing fraternity believe Fury has merely hung up his gloves as a means of driving up his purse for a lucrative clash against AJ.

However, Warren insists money wouldn’t be his primary motivation for returning to the ring.

“I’ve not bothered him and I’ve certainly not spoken to him about fighting again,” Fury’s promoter told the Ariel and Ade show on Tuesday.

“And if he does, that’s got to be his choice. He’s a very, very wealthy guy, he’s made a serious amount of money.

“He doesn’t need, financially, to fight. If he does fight, it’s because he’s got a fighting heart.

“Obviously he’ll get well paid if he does fight. But he’s got a fighting heart.”

Fury walked away from boxing after back-to-back losses at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk.

The Ukrainian slickster edged past Fury in a tight inaugural encounter via split decision in May 2024 before widening the margin to a unanimous decision victory in their December rematch.

Three weeks later, Fury took to social media to announce his retirement, and Warren isn’t expecting his client’s stance to change.

“Can he walk away from the sport? He says he has,” Warren added.

“And at this moment in time, he said to me, he’s really in a good place and that he’s very happy.

“And I just want him now to enjoy his family and his life. He had a hard year last year.

“Three training camps one after another, one fight got cancelled because he got the cut eye.

“He needs now to go enjoy his life and enjoy being with his family, which is what he’s doing.”

He Was Robbed,Oleksandr Usyk’s Team Finally Reacts To Tyson Fury’s Shock Retirement After Claiming He Was Robbed

Tyson Fury retired from the sport of boxing at age 36 this year following back-to-back losses against Oleksandr Usyk.

The big man from Morecambe is a two-time world heavyweight champion with statement wins over Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder. He fell short for the first time in his professional career in May of 2024, battling Usyk for the undisputed title

In the rematch, the Ukrainian put three of the four major belts on the line after vacating the IBF. He retained them with a unanimous decision, one which Fury branded a ‘robbery.’

Less than a month later, ‘The Gypsy King’ would announce he was to hang up the gloves, ending with a phrase highlighting daylight robbery.

“Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, it has been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this; Dick Turpin wore a mask.”

Speaking to TalkSPORT, Usyk’s longtime promoter Alex Krassyuk joked that it was the ‘seventh’ time the Brit had announced his retirement.

“I thought it was the seventh time. That was my personal calculation.”

Krassyuk went on to praise Fury and said that he believes fans will see him step through the ropes once more.

“It’s 50/50. He did sound serious, but I can’t be sure he’s out of the ring forever. That’s my personal opinion, my hunch, my feeling. I still can see him fighting. It can be anything, like money, something interesting.

“He’s a champion. He’s strong. He’s well loved and respected in the world of boxing. Why should he quit? I think after six, seven months, he will have a rest and he will probably change his mind.”

Tyson fury, Deontay wilder

Should Fury heavyweight return, he is widely expected to face Anthony Joshua after years of the fight marinating. As for Usyk, he has a keen eye on Daniel Dubois’ IBF title defence against Joseph Parker on February 22, with a match-up against the winner giving him a chance to become undisputed yet again.

‘It is something I would really like to do’: Alex Pereira wants boxing match with Oleksandr Usyk

Alex Pereira wants to be a three-sport world champion.

A former two-division Glory kickboxing champion, Pereira transitioned to MMA and then joined the UFC in 2021, where he quickly put together one of the most accomplished careers in UFC history. A former middleweight champion and the reigning light heavyweight king, “Poatan” has already accomplished more than most fighters could dream of, but he’s not ready to stop there. Because aside from his ambition to bump up and challenge for the heavyweight title, Pereira also hopes to one day compete inside the boxing ring as well.

“I don’t know, I think anything is possible. It’s something I can’t plan, but it is something I would really like to do.”

That’s something that I really want,” Pereira told the Jaxxon Podcast via a Portuguese translator. “I’m under contract with the UFC. We know [Conor] McGregor did it. I don’t know how I would, but someday I would really like to do it.”

Pereira has some experience with boxing already, making his professional debut back in 2017 and winning by third-round TKO. But Poatan isn’t talking about just dipping his toe in the water, he wants to jump right into the deep end of the pool.

“I’m the champ. I would like to fight the champ,” Pereira said. “So Oleksandr Usyk …

“I think it’s a very good fight. I love boxing. I see some people talking, ‘Oh, if it were pure boxing he would be lost’. Man, when you talk pure boxing, I feel great. I think I could fight these guys out there. I’ve already done some sparring with experienced guys, Plinio [Cruz, his coach] knows it, and they’re winning everything there.”

The 2012 Olympic gold medalist boxer at heavyweight, Usyk is one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world at the moment and moving up the ranks of all-time greats following his pair of wins over Tyson Fury in 2024. That suggests this would be a monumentally difficult task, but Pereira’s coach has full faith in his ability.

Mike Tyson

“Me, personally, I’ve put him already to spar some world-class, top-10 heavyweight boxers,” Plinio Cruz added. “Guys with names, real good names that I’m not going to mention, but he did really good, so I think he could do good. I believe in him.”

Pereira is scheduled to make the fourth defense of his light heavyweight title against Magomed Ankalaev in the main event of UFC 313 on March 8.

Oleksandr Usyk Names The ‘Hit Harder’ Fighter Who can Hit Him Harder Than Joshua, Fury And Dubois

Oleksandr Usyk has beaten five Brits in the last seven years, four in the heavyweight ranks including the nation’s best in Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois.

Usyk first visited these shores to defend his undisputed cruiserweight belts against Tony Bellew, stopping the challenger inside eight rounds before deciding up was time to move up to the heavyweight ranks

After a warm-up against Chazz Witherspoon, Usyk was tested by Derek Chisora, weathering an early storm to win a unanimous decision and set up a shot at Anthony Joshua’s unified titles. The Ukrainian beat ‘AJ’ twice in a row, winning then retaining the belts.

He then made a defence against Daniel Dubois, which included a controversial low blow that saw the champion down and recovering for minutes before rising to stop the 27-year-old Brit in the ninth.

Most recently, Usyk did the double over Tyson Fury, taking everything ‘The Gypsy King’ could throw to win by split decision and become undisputed. He would win unanimously in their rematch

In an interview with the 3 Knockdown Rule, he called the Morecambe man his hardest fight, but was clear that Chisora hit him harder than all others.

“Listen, I have respect for Tyson Fury. A fighter, a great man, but my opponent. Very hard man. Very smart … [Hardest fight] I think yes. Punch? I think no. Derek Chisora. Very tough guy. Derek – right hand, left hand, I’d like block… ‘Oh my God! Oh move Alex, this is dangerous.’”

Usyk has described the punch of the heavyweight veteran as ‘a baseball bat.’ Chisora has been competing professionally since 2007 but is currently enjoying somewhat of an Indian Summer as he makes his way towards 50 fights before finally hanging up the gloves.

He lost twice to Joseph Parker after the Usyk defeat before beating Kubrat Pulev and challenging for Fury’s then WBC belt in a trilogy that he lost to make it 3-0 to ‘The Gypsy King.’

His most recent wins over Gerald Washington and particularly Joe Joyce, however, have seen fans enjoying this farewell tour slightly more. Next up is Otto Wallin on February 8 in Manchester – number 49.

He is young trader “I’m The Best In The World”: Heavyweight With 80% KO Ratio Wants To Fight Oleksandr Usyk Next: “I’m The Best In The World”

A highly rated world heavyweight contender is looking for the biggest fights possible, and that could include a fight with Oleksandr Usyk.

Matching up-and-coming heavyweights can be a tricky job. It’s important for young fighters to learn their trade and experience plenty of different in-ring scenarios so that when the levels go up they are not out of their depth.

Right now the heavyweight landscape is as full and busy as it has ever been with plenty of fighters vying for position as they work towards the ultimate goal of becoming a world champion.

The belt holders are IBF ruler Daniel Dubois who defends his title against Joseph Parker on February 22, and unified WBC, WBA and WBO champion and pound-for-pound great Usyk, who does not yet have his next contest locked in.

One man rapidly building a head of steam is Moses Itauma, the 20-year-old knockout artist looking to beat Mike Tyson‘s record of being the youngest-ever heavyweight belt holder.

Last time out he stopped Mariusz Wach and doesn’t currently have a fight date scheduled. Speaking to BoxNation, he was asked if he would take a fight with Usyk next.

“Why would Usyk take that fight? That’s obviously my first thought. If the fight was to present itself and they said you’re fighting Usyk in May, I’m taking it 100%. There’s no loss in that. I would take that fight 100% but I think why would he do that?”

Itauma, who has been heralded by both Fury and Usyk before, backed himself to beat anyone.

“I think I’m the best fighter in the world. I just need to go out and prove it.”

It seems more likely right now that Usyk will fight the winner of Parker versus Dubois and attempt to become a two-time undisputed champion.

Lennox Lewis Is Certain Who Would Win Between Prime Mike Tyson And Oleksandr Usyk

Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson and Oleksandr Usyk are three of the greatest heavyweights of all time

Oleksandr Usyk has recently cemented himself as one of the all-time greats after claiming a second victory over Tyson Fury in December, successfully defending his unified WBC, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles in the process.

In their first fight last May, the Ukrainian icon became the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the ‘four belt era’, having already achieved undisputed status at cruiserweight back in 2018.

Lewis and ‘Iron’ Mike fought during the same era back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, eventually clashing with each other in June 2002. ‘The Lion’ overcame the once formidable Tyson, knocking him out in the eighth round to keep a hold of his WBC heavyweight title.

The British legend would go on to fight just once more, stopping Vitali Klitschko in the sixth round of his 44th and final professional appearance.

In a round of ‘Winner Stays On’ with Mail Sport Boxing, Lewis was asked to pick a winner between the Ukrainian superstar, and his former opponent ‘Iron’ Mike.

“Mike Tyson.”

Tyson became the youngest world heavyweight champion in 1986 when he blasted out Trevor Berbick in the second round to capture the WBC heavyweight crown.

Despite facing a number of difficulties outside the ring during his tenure, ‘Iron’ Mike is regarded by so many as one of the best heavyweights to ever grace the sport, holding the undisputed championship for three years between 1987 and 1990, defeating the likes of Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks and Frank Bruno.

Eddie Hearn insists ‘only one man can beat’ Oleksandr Usyk after laying waste to Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois

Oleksandr Usyk has barely put a foot wrong during his unblemished 23-0 professional career – but Eddie Hearn believes one man could push him all the way.

The Ukrainian slickster is the current pound-for-pound king of boxing and is one of only three male fighters in the four-belt era to achieve undisputed supremacy in two separate weight classes (alongside Naoya Inoue and Terence Crawford).

After unifying all the belts at cruiserweight with a stunning victory over Murat Gassiev in July 2018, and then defending them by flattening Tony Bellew four months later, Usyk moved up to boxing’s glamour division.

There, he recorded a couple of routine victories over Chazz Witherspoon and Derek Chisora before landing a blockbuster showdown with WBA, WBO and IBF title holder Anthony Joshua.

Several members of the boxing fraternity insisted that Usyk was ‘too small’ to beat AJ.

But the masterful technician proved his doubters wrong by outclassing the Watford powerhouse in back-to-back bouts.

Usyk then laid waste to the fast-rising Daniel Dubois before taking on WBC champion Tyson Fury in May 2024 for the undisputed crown.’The Cat’ edged their epic inaugural encounter via split decision and subsequently widened the margin in their rematch seven months later.

In between the two fights, Usyk was forced to relinquish the IBF title to Dubois in order to pursue his rematch with Fury.

However, Hearn believes lineal cruiserweight king Jai Opetaia has the best chance of beating him.

“I’m looking down the road, Jai is humble,” Hearn told ESNEWS after Opetaia’s recent blowout of David Nyika.

“He’s committed to the cruiserweight division but for me one of the best of all time was Usyk, he became undisputed, moved up and became undisputed at heavyweight.

“The medium focus right now is every belt in the division and the long-term focus is to fight Usyk for the unified heavyweight world championship.

“I believe he is the only fighter who can give Usyk a real fight over the next 12-18 months.”

Opetaia is the consensus best fighter at 200lbs and is currently in possession of the IBF and Ring Magazine titles.
