Serena Williams has taken aim at the ban handed down to world number one Jannik Sinner, claiming she would have been suspended for 20 years if guilty of the same offence.

Sinner, who returned two positive drug tests to Clostebol, an anabolic steroid, accepted a three-month ban after reaching an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The ban is in place from February 9 to May 4.

In a wide-ranging interview with Time Magazine after being named one of the 100 most influential people in the world, Williams said Sinner is a “fantastic personality” and “great for the sport” but was critical of the leniency of his sentence.

“I’ve been put down so much, I don’t want to bring anyone down,” Williams said “Men’s tennis needs him.”

“(But) If I did that, I would have gotten 20 years. Let’s be honest. I would have gotten Grand Slams taken away from me.”

Williams then drew a comparison to Maria Sharapova who was banned for two years in 2016, reduced to 15 months on appeal, for unintentionally taking a performance enhancing drug.

“Just weirdly and oddly, I can’t help but think about Maria all this time,” Williams said.

“I can’t help but feel for her.”

The 23-time major winner is the latest high profile tennis figure to publicly criticise Sinner’s treatment.

Australian Nick Kyrgios has been among the most vocal, declaring on X “fairness in tennis does not exist”.

“So he was found guilty — hence the ban. But didn’t get stripped of anything and can play the French. Sad sad sad day,” Kyrgios posted.

Former British number one Tim Henman called the agreement between Sinner and the WTA “too convenient”, while three-time major winner Stan Wawrinka said he “did not believe in clean sport anymore”.

Italian Olympic gold medallist swimmer Federica Pellegrini, meanwhile, told La Repubblica: “I believe his case was handled differently from 99% of other athletes.”

Sinner’s violation carried a maximum sanction of four years. His defence claimed that he was inadvertently contaminated with the substance by his physiotherapist.

The Italian is expected to return at the Rome Masters, just three days after his ban ends. It will be his first appearance since winning the Australian Open in January.

Serena Williams and Coco Gauff Serve Fashion Goals as They Exude Tennis Royalty at the Oscars Vanity Fair Party

What does it feel like to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with your idol? Just ask Coco Gauff. The 21-year-old tennis star had a full-circle moment at the 2025 Oscars, posing alongside none other than the GOAT, Serena Williams. The two share a deep connection—one that goes back over a decade. Gauff first met Williams when she was just 9 or 10 years old, playing a young Serena in a Delta commercial. That was a dream come true for a little girl who had always looked up to the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Fast forward to Hollywood’s biggest night, and the two icons were side by side once again!

For the occasion, Gauff dazzled in a custom yellow Miu Miu gown with crystal embroidery, accessorized with dangling earrings. She later switched things up for the Vanity Fair After Party, wearing a stunning yellow and green gown. Meanwhile, Serena Williams stunned in a sequined, sleeveless, black Dolce and Gabbana gown with a thigh-high slit. She paired it with a black stone necklace. The duo posed together in their glamorous avatar at the after party as Gauff shared the snapshot on her Instagram Story.

It was a night of glitz, glamour, and celebration. But for Gauff, the moment with Williams meant something even deeper. Tennis was always in the cards for Gauff, thanks to Serena’s influence. Her father, Corey Gauff, once revealed on The Sit-Down Podcast that his daughter’s tennis journey began after he watched Williams win the 2011 Australian Open. At the time, Coco was just five years old. That moment sparked a dream that eventually became a reality. She has always credited Williams for paving the way for young Black girls in tennis. On media day at the 2023 US Open, she paid a heartfelt tribute to her idol. “Before Serena came along, there was not really an icon of the sport that looked like me,” Gauff said. “So growing up, I never thought that I was different because the No. 1 player in the world was somebody who looked like me. I think that’s the biggest thing that I can take from what I’ve learned from Serena.”

And like a true successor, the 21-year-old has already matched various records of the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Gauff’s 2023 US Open victory made her the first American teenager to win the title since Williams in 1999. And in 2024, she became the first American to win the WTA Finals since Serena Williams did it in 2014.

Coco Gauff gets back to the ‘tennis world’ after Hollywood glitz and glam

Coco Gauff kicked off her 2025 season in style, leading Team USA to victory at the United Cup. But since then, it’s been a bit of a rough patch. The American tennis starlet was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open by Paula Badosa. She then had a disappointing run at the Qatar Open, where she was ousted by Marta Kostyuk in the first round. At the Dubai Tennis Championships, also she faced an early exit. The World No.3 shockingly lost to McCartney Kessler in straight sets in the first round and suffered two early exits during the Middle East swing. Now, for the first time in two years, Gauff is heading into Indian Wells on a three-match losing streak.

But she’s not losing hope. Even at the Oscars red carpet, she had tennis on her mind. The 21-year-old tennis star talked about her experience and said, “It was definitely overwhelming, something I’m not used to but it was super cool to just be here and experience it and step out of the sporting world. But I have my sneakers on for tomorrow.”

Just a few days ago, she was spotted training at the University of California in Los Angeles, gearing up for the tournament. She even gave fans a glimpse into her preparations, sharing a picture on her Instagram Stories. Dressed in an all-pink jacket and track pants, she captioned it, “lol and just like that we are back in the tennis world.”

The Indian Wells tournament kicks off on March 6, and last year, the 21-year-old tennis star was just within arm’s reach of the title. She made it all the way to the semifinals, battling through the draw. But in a tense three-set showdown, she fell short against  Maria Sakkari. Can the World No.3 turn it around this year and go back to her winning ways?

The Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics not only aimed to review the history of the French city but also commemorated great athletes from around the world. And among them, one of the tennis legends could not be missing. Serena Williams was one of those responsible for carrying the torch alongside Rafa Nadal, Carl Lewis, and Nadia Comaneci.

Since then, the American has been enjoying the events and attending various competitions. Among others, she did not hesitate to watch live the one of Simone Biles along with dozens of other familiar faces. But she also has time to spend with her children, and it is exactly at that moment when she had a problem that she did not hesitate to publicly denounce.

Serena Williams Says She Was "Denied Access" To Paris Restaurant, Staff Explains Incident

The tennis player has used her social media to point out an incident she had this Monday with The Peninsula restaurant in Paris. “I have been denied access to eat on the rooftop of a restaurant empty of nicer places, but never with my children. There is always a first time,” she denounced on her X account (Twitter).

With this, Selena Williams has not only shown anger about what happened, but has also expressed outrage. However, the establishment itself has tried to calm the waters, apologizing to her in the comments section.

“We apologize for the disappointment you experienced tonight. Unfortunately, our rooftop bar was fully booked, and the only available tables you saw belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was also fully booked,” they explained.

They have also made it clear that for them, it is an “honour” to welcome a public figure of this caliber and that they will be delighted to receive his visit in the future. However, this time it was not possible due to prior commitments, as they have clarified.

A dispute that the followers of the American player have not hesitated to fuel. Among other things, many have wanted to support the tennis player. “Who doesn’t leave room for a queen?” a user expressed. “How can you deny someone when it’s Serena Williams…?” added another.

And it’s not surprising to see this tennis player’s reaction on social media, considering that she is quite active in this regard. Right after the Opening Ceremony, she didn’t hesitate to joke about it. “I participated in an incredible opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and traveled by boat in the rain, and it was pouring! So much so that my eyelashes came off,” she exclaimed.

Serena Williams’ journey to reclaim her curves is paying off, and fans are taking notice. The tennis legend, 42, has been candidly sharing her quest to shed extra pounds since giving birth to her and her husband, Alexis Ohanian’s, second child, daughter Adira, in August 2023.

New photos of Williams in Paris for the 2024 Olympics have her supporters raving about how good she looks a year into the weightless journey. “You lost all the baby weight. And slaying,” a follower wrote in the comments of her Aug. 4 post.

She shared four images of herself wearing an ensemble that was composed of a black, spandex body suit covered up by a beige sporty and chic sleeveless button up with fishnet underneath and a slight view of her cleavage.

“How does she look so skinnier now than EVER!!!!” exclaimed a user as they gawked over her recent Paris fashion look.

Still, not everyone was onboard with Williams’ transformation progress. A critical observer commented, “Something seems off about her weight look at her legs.”

Someone else quipped, “We’re just going to start calling you Serena the snack.” And a third fan asked, “Did we try on the skirt this month?!?!?! I’m so invested at this point.”

At the top of the year, Williams shared a video of her trying her best to fit into a designer denim skirt.

“I got this cool Valentino skirt when I was pregnant and I was like, ‘I’m gonna be able to fit in this when I don’t have a belly,’” she said about her goal. As she pulled the skirt up her legs, she quickly realized that her fuller thighs and backside made it clear that she wasn’t quite slim enough to pull off the look.

Williams admitted, “I should have been able to fit it by now, but I ran into some … I got distracted for about a month. And so, I’m about a month behind. We have a ways to go.”

She documented her second attempt at fitting into the garment in May. Again, her backside prevented the skirt from gliding up to her waist with ease. Her supporters were appreciative of the relatable content, with many suggesting she get a bigger size instead of downsizing her curvier figure.

In June, Williams had a non-invasive procedure called radio-frequency (RF) skin-tightening treatment on her stomach.

But the decorated athlete continued her quest as she uploaded a third try on July 1 following a trip to Paris. This time, she had made significant headway, not only managing to pull the skirt up to her waist but also buttoning it.

However, the zipper was the final straw as it did not budge, proving she was close but not exactly the right size.

The snug fit was met with excitement from Williams, who said, “Well, we’ve made a lot of progress. … I’m not as sad … it’s a little tight. I can’t really breathe. … I might have to do one more video.”

While a fourth video has yet to be shared, fans are patiently waiting for an update.

Several others who flooded the post’s comment section raved about her most recent look, her body, clothing, and makeup included. Williams has had a series of hits and misses when it comes to her glam in recent months, but several fans now believe she has the perfect team in place to keep her looking stellar amid complaints about her stepping out in public looking drab instead of fab.

Serena Williams has called out a five-star hotel in Paris for denying her family access to a rooftop restaurant despite it being completely empty.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner took to X to publicly complain about the treatment she received at The Peninsula Hotel on Monday, sharing her annoyance at the way in which her visit went down.

‘Yikes,’ Williams wrote. ‘@peninsulaparis I’ve been denied access to rooftop to eat in a empty restaurant of nicer places but never with my kids. Always a first.’

Williams also shared a snap of the sign on the hotel, so that her followers could know which establishment she was talking about.

The Peninsula Hotel later expressed regret for turning down Williams, sharing on X: ‘Dear Mrs. Williams, Please accept our deepest apologies for the disappointment you encountered tonight.

‘Unfortunately, our rooftop bar was indeed fully booked and the only unoccupied tables you saw belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was fully reserved.

‘We have always been honored to welcome you and will always be to welcome you again. The Peninsula Paris.’

Williams’ fans were quick to rip the hotel for rejecting the tennis legend as one X user asked: ‘How does one get denied when they are Serena Williams…… lol’

‘Glad you didn’t have to waste money there,’ another fan pointed out.

‘You’re better off not going, their food is subpar — I’ve unfortunately had to pay for it quite a few times,’ someone else said.

Serena Williams Has the Perfect Response for People Who Call Her 'Manly' | Glamour

Williams has attended several Olympic disciplines with her six-year-old daughter, Olympia, and her family in Paris.

She was also among several high-profile names to be part of the Games’ opening ceremony on July 26, as she shared a boat with Rafael Nadal, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci.

Williams described the ceremony as ‘unforgettable.’

‘From being part of an amazing Opening Ceremony at the Paris Olympics-to riding in the boat in the rain-and it was pouring! So much so my lashes came right on off,’ she joked on X.

On top of her Grand Slam victories, Williams has four Olympic gold medals to her name, including in both singles and doubles in London in 2012.

At the fifth time of asking, Novak Djokovic is finally into an Olympic final.

The Olympic Games haven’t always been the happiest of hunting grounds for arguably the greatest male player of all time, with Djokovic on the wrong side of some big results throughout his Olympic career.

However, after claiming bronze at the Beijing 2008 Games, he is guaranteed at least a silver medal after beating Lorenzo Musetti in Friday’s semi-final.

Carlos Alcaraz stands between him and a gold medal but, by reaching the final, he has already matched two other legends.

He, Serena Williams, and Roger Federer are now the only players in the modern era to reach singles finals after their 30th birthdays.

Having already claimed two doubles golds, Williams finally claimed Olympic singles gold at the age of 30, producing one of the most dominant runs in Games history.

Seeded fourth, the US star downed Jelena Jankovic for the loss of just four games in round one, before dropping five games to Urszula Radwanska in round two – the most games she dropped in any match.

Williams then stormed past Vera Zvonareva and Caroline Wozniacki to reach the last eight, before downing world No 1 Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-2 to reach the gold medal match.

She famously dropped just one game against Maria Sharapova to take the title, and also won a third doubles crown alongside sister Venus.

The London Games also saw a 30-year-old Federer reach the final, claiming his only Olympic singles medal.

On his beloved Centre Court, the Swiss star battled past Alejandro Falla in three sets to start his campaign, before easing past Julien Benneteau and Denis Istomin to reach the last eight.

There, he saw off the big-serving John Isner in straight sets, before scraping past Juan Martin del Potro in the last four, prevailing 19-17 in an extraordinary third set.

Perhaps fatigued by that epic, Federer was beaten comfortably by Andy Murray in the final, the Brit prevailing 6-2, 6-1, 7-5.

What makes Djokovic’s run even more impressive is that, while Federer and Williams were 30 when they achieved this, the world No 2 has reached the final aged 37.

It has been an impressive run for the Serb, who is yet to drop a set.

He started his campaign with a one-sided win over Matt Ebden, needing just 54 minutes and dropping one game, before easing past great rival Rafael Nadal in a memorable round two meeting.

Djokovic then saw off Dominik Koepfer in the third round, before rallying from a 0-4 deficit in the second set to continue his recent dominance over eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight.

The No 1 seed was tested at times against Musetti but was largely comfortable in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph, and all eyes are now on how he fares against Alcaraz on Sunday.

The Olympic Games have been underway for a week since their inauguration, and within the three disciplines with the most events – gymnastics, swimming, and track and field – we’ve seen the majority of gymnastics and swimming competitions, with a couple of gold medals for the sublime Simone Biles and four gold medals for Léon Marchand in swimming. With only two days of swimming activities left, the focus now shifts to track and field, with several US athletes emerging as favorites, especially on the track.

Hecklers be warned, Alexis Ohanian is making a sport out of clapping back at people trying to shade him on Twitter.

Ohanian, 41, is speculated to have a net worth of $150 million. Williams, 42, has reportedly amassed a worth of $300 million from her storied tennis career and business endeavors.

The couple has been married since November 2017 and are parents to two daughters, Olympia, 6, and Adira, 11 months. As the family has been in Paris in support of the Olympics; the seven-time Wimbledon title winner was also part of the July 26 Opening Ceremony.

However, when the proud dad and husband took a break from spectating at the Games, his Twitter timeline turned into a bit of a mess.

While enjoying an outing at Disneyland Paris with his daughters, Ohanian took a moment to record a video to promote the upcoming Athlos track meet, which will host 36 of the sport’s fastest stars, such as Gabby Thomas, Faith Kipyegon, and Alexis Holmes, to name a few, on Sept. 26 in New York.

“It’s the largest prize ever in the history of track and field. The winners are going to get $60,000 each at that event,” he said. Speaking directly to the competitors, he then sweetened the deal, adding, “Ladies, if you win a medal here, in Paris, I’m gonna give you $60,000 as well,” bringing their takeaway to $120,000.

His love for the Olympics aside, the entrepreneur said that he is “just happy to play a role in supporting track and field and especially women athletes. So, this is just the start, but have an amazing Olympics.”

The purpose of the event, which was created by Ohanian and is named after his Athlos venture capital fund, is to push forward the continued widespread investments being made in track and field outside of the Olympics. One of his supporters praised his efforts, writing, “More people like u in the world, with a big heart and who encourage athletes.”

But a troll instead used the opportunity to accuse Ohanian of bankrolling the jackpot by turning it into an expense for Williams. “Translation; ” I am going to use Serena’s money because me have no money to spend like that,’” the individual wrote.

Ohanian had already been in his comments replying to fans, so it came as no surprise that he also addressed the bold critic. He hit back with, “You created an entire Twitter account just to say something that stupid?”

Someone coming to Ohanian’s defense, made an attempt to slight the offensive poster when they said, “Umm…tell us you don’t know how to use Google without telling us you don’t know how to use Google. LMAO.”

Again, in elite clapback form, the multimillionaire took a swing at the heckler when he replied, “Dude can barely put together a sentence, that’s asking too much.”

The person would later dredge up Ohanian’s 2020 admission that Williams introduced him to the practice of using a washcloth. But by the time, the businessman was done giving the tit-for-tat exchange any attention.

Despite the criticism, many fans have come to Williams’ defense. Some pointed out that the makeup applied may have exaggerated her features rather than indicating any surgical enhancements.

Misogynoir and body image

The backlash against Williams has also been framed within the context of misogynoir. One critic commented on how people managed to turn a video about tennis into a botox witch-hunt. This highlights the ongoing struggle many women, particularly women of color, face regarding societal beauty standards.

Paris Olympics 2024: Coco Gauff is set to make her debut in the showpiece event and has taken inspiration from the legendary Serena Williams, who has four Olympic gold medals to her name.

Coco Gauff said that she has looked up to the legendary Serena Williams before stepping out for the Paris Olympics. The World No.2 will be one of the top contenders to win a gold medal in the upcoming quadrennial event. Back in 2019, Gauff, at the age of 15, grabbed eyeballs after she defeated Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon.

However, the 2023 US Open-winner never locked horns with Serena, which remains her ‘only regret’. However, Gauff said that she relishes her relationship with the American legend, who she deems as her ‘friend and mentor’.

Wimbledon: Serena Williams inspired Coco Gauff to play tennis

“You’ve been lucky enough that your on-court relationships have turned into off-court friendships. One of those notable friendships is with your idol, Serena Williams. Serena was once just a stranger printed on a poster hanging in your room, and now you still can’t believe she’s a friend and mentor,” Gauff wrote in a letter on the NBC Olympics website.

Having won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, Serena is one of the greats of the game. Serena also has four Olympic medals to her name. Gauff was in awe of the way Serena conducted herself and made a reputation of a champion.

“Her profound impact on tennis, what it means to be a champion and to break barriers, is a legacy you hope to uphold and carry with you into your first Olympic Games,” she wrote.

Gauff is one of the six members of USA’s tennis team, along with Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro, Desirae Krawczyk and Emma Navarro. Apart from taking part in singles, Gauff will also play doubles with Pegula.

“The excitement is overwhelming. You can’t wait to travel with your teammates, to take on the Olympic tennis tournament and hopefully increase the United States’ medal count that you continually check each Olympics,” Gauff added.
