The Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics not only aimed to review the history of the French city but also commemorated great athletes from around the world. And among them, one of the tennis legends could not be missing. Serena Williams was one of those responsible for carrying the torch alongside Rafa Nadal, Carl Lewis, and Nadia Comaneci.

Since then, the American has been enjoying the events and attending various competitions. Among others, she did not hesitate to watch live the one of Simone Biles along with dozens of other familiar faces. But she also has time to spend with her children, and it is exactly at that moment when she had a problem that she did not hesitate to publicly denounce.

Serena Williams Says She Was "Denied Access" To Paris Restaurant, Staff Explains Incident

The tennis player has used her social media to point out an incident she had this Monday with The Peninsula restaurant in Paris. “I have been denied access to eat on the rooftop of a restaurant empty of nicer places, but never with my children. There is always a first time,” she denounced on her X account (Twitter).

With this, Selena Williams has not only shown anger about what happened, but has also expressed outrage. However, the establishment itself has tried to calm the waters, apologizing to her in the comments section.

“We apologize for the disappointment you experienced tonight. Unfortunately, our rooftop bar was fully booked, and the only available tables you saw belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was also fully booked,” they explained.

They have also made it clear that for them, it is an “honour” to welcome a public figure of this caliber and that they will be delighted to receive his visit in the future. However, this time it was not possible due to prior commitments, as they have clarified.

A dispute that the followers of the American player have not hesitated to fuel. Among other things, many have wanted to support the tennis player. “Who doesn’t leave room for a queen?” a user expressed. “How can you deny someone when it’s Serena Williams…?” added another.

And it’s not surprising to see this tennis player’s reaction on social media, considering that she is quite active in this regard. Right after the Opening Ceremony, she didn’t hesitate to joke about it. “I participated in an incredible opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and traveled by boat in the rain, and it was pouring! So much so that my eyelashes came off,” she exclaimed.

The 2024 Paris Olympics hinted at being an elaborate affair from the get-go. A stupendous Opening Ceremony caught the attention of the world with its extravagant set-up. While controversies revolving around the incident have been rampant, the grandeur of the entire thing just couldn’t be ignored. And yet, Olympic legend Carl Lewis assured EssentiallySports that he had very few things to complain about, considering how he got to experience the entire enthralling event.

Lewis was seen on the boat that hosted legends from different sports at the Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony. While seeing legendary figures like Serena Williams, Carl, and gymnastics icon Nadia Comaneci on the same boat was a sight to behold on its own, Lewis’ glee was heightened by the fourth person in the gang.

Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal's Olympic Torch Moment Together Draws Epic Reaction From Patrick Mouratoglou - The SportsRush

Carl Lewis had his moment with old buddies at the Paris Olympics

Comaneci, Williams, and Lewis were joined by the tennis phenome Rafael Nadal as the four veterans of their fields carried the Olympic Torch at the Opening Serena. After the ceremony, Shreya Verma, the Olympic correspondent for EssentiallySports, caught up with the nine-time Olympic gold medalist Lewis to talk about how it was to share the stage with some of the greatest sports stars of all time. Candidly, the track legend explained that things were like a reunion of friends.

…going down the river in that boat it was a little rocky cuz it’s pretty fast, you know,” Carl told us with a chuckle as he remembered how the rain added to the misery. While Lewis was undoubtedly one of the main selling points of the Opening Ceremony, he was only among the many who helped the Olympic Torch to reach its final destination.

Stars from all walks of life chimed in

The 2024 Paris Olympics made history in more ways than one, and we, at EssentiallySports, enjoyed every moment of it. For the first time in Olympic lore, the Opening Ceremony was held outside of a stadium and on a water body as athletes and guests made their way through the city on boats over the river Seine.

Glimpses of the Olympic Torch were first shared with fans via a video broadcast where French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane where he brought retrieved the torch from actor Jamel Debbouze who took it to the Stade de France. After Zidane brought it to Saint Denis, the torch changed hands multiple times before firing up the Olympic Cauldron.

Along with the abovementioned five stars, the torch was also held by French tennis celebrity Amélie Mauresmo, basketball star Tony Parker, and the oldest-living French Olympic gold medalist Charles Coste, who won his honors at the 1948 London Olympics. The torch was ultimately passed to sprinter Marie-José Pérec, who lit the balloon-shaped cauldron.

With the Opening Ceremony being the illustrious affair that it was, do you think the 33rd Olympics will come to an end with a similar bang? Tell us!

Novak Djokovic on Sunday became the first tennis player in a dozen years, male or female, to complete a tennis “Golden Slam,” winning all four major annual tournaments and an Olympic gold medal.

The 37-year-old Serb, considered by many the greatest male tennis player in history, defeated the young Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz to win the gold at the Paris Olympics.

Many Catholics took note of the fact that an elated Djokovic made the sign of the cross several times after winning the match — but you may also have noticed that he did the sign of the cross from right to left, rather than the typical Catholic left to right.

Novak Djokovic defeats Carlos Alcaraz for first Olympic gold medal

Djokovic is a Serbian Orthodox Christian. The sign of the cross is rich with meaning for all Christians, including Catholics, but the Orthodox practice, which is arguably more ancient, adds additional levels of meaning.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the very earliest Christian practice appears to be the tracing of the sign of the cross of one’s forehead, which later evolved into the practice of making a sign of the cross across a larger portion of the body. St. Basil (329–379) wrote that the apostles “taught us to mark with the sign of the cross those who put their hope in the Lord.”

When Catholics do the sign of the cross today, they cross themselves with their hand starting at the top, going down, and then from left to right. When Orthodox Christians do the sign of the cross, they start at the top, go down, and then from right to left.

Many Orthodox sources say part of the reason that the sign of the cross is done in this direction is because during the Orthodox Divine Liturgy — the equivalent of the Mass — the Orthodox priest does the sign of the cross from left to right, facing the people, who copy his movements in mirror image. That said, the exact reasons for the differences are ancient and not entirely clear even to the Orthodox themselves.

There’s another level of meaning in the Orthodox sign of the cross, though, that is more readily documented. The Orthodox hold their hand with the index and middle fingers and thumb together, a symbol of the three persons of the Holy Trinity — the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — together as one God. The two fingers, ring and pinky, that remain down symbolize the two natures of Jesus: fully human and fully divine.

Djokovic’s Christian history

Djokovic was brought up in the Serbian Orthodox Church, which claims the majority of the country’s citizens and several million members worldwide. He grew up during a tumultuous time in the region and survived the wars between the Yugoslavian states.

In 2011, Djokovic was awarded the Serbian Orthodox Church’s highest honor “for his active love toward Mother Church, particularly fervent and persistent helping [of] the Serbian people and the sanctuaries of our Holy Church.”

He has donated several million dollars to the Serbian public health system and to charities run by the Serbian Orthodox Church.

“This is the most important title of my life, because before being an athlete, I am an Orthodox Christian,” he said upon receiving the award.

Despite Djokovic’s frequent displays of a cross necklace, performance of the sign of the cross, and talk of God, a 2015 biography of Djokovic opined that “[i]t would wrong to suggest that he is devoutly religious, but the ritualistic role the church plays in the life of Serbia is sufficiently strong that it is very much a part of his life.”

Still, the tennis champ has shown himself to be a person animated by love of neighbor. He runs the Novak Djokovic Foundation, which primarily focuses on rebuilding preschools and supporting teachers and parents of young schoolchildren. And in 2017, he opened a restaurant in Serbia that provides free food to the homeless.

Serena Williams’ journey to reclaim her curves is paying off, and fans are taking notice. The tennis legend, 42, has been candidly sharing her quest to shed extra pounds since giving birth to her and her husband, Alexis Ohanian’s, second child, daughter Adira, in August 2023.

New photos of Williams in Paris for the 2024 Olympics have her supporters raving about how good she looks a year into the weightless journey. “You lost all the baby weight. And slaying,” a follower wrote in the comments of her Aug. 4 post.

She shared four images of herself wearing an ensemble that was composed of a black, spandex body suit covered up by a beige sporty and chic sleeveless button up with fishnet underneath and a slight view of her cleavage.

“How does she look so skinnier now than EVER!!!!” exclaimed a user as they gawked over her recent Paris fashion look.

Still, not everyone was onboard with Williams’ transformation progress. A critical observer commented, “Something seems off about her weight look at her legs.”

Someone else quipped, “We’re just going to start calling you Serena the snack.” And a third fan asked, “Did we try on the skirt this month?!?!?! I’m so invested at this point.”

At the top of the year, Williams shared a video of her trying her best to fit into a designer denim skirt.

“I got this cool Valentino skirt when I was pregnant and I was like, ‘I’m gonna be able to fit in this when I don’t have a belly,’” she said about her goal. As she pulled the skirt up her legs, she quickly realized that her fuller thighs and backside made it clear that she wasn’t quite slim enough to pull off the look.

Williams admitted, “I should have been able to fit it by now, but I ran into some … I got distracted for about a month. And so, I’m about a month behind. We have a ways to go.”

She documented her second attempt at fitting into the garment in May. Again, her backside prevented the skirt from gliding up to her waist with ease. Her supporters were appreciative of the relatable content, with many suggesting she get a bigger size instead of downsizing her curvier figure.

In June, Williams had a non-invasive procedure called radio-frequency (RF) skin-tightening treatment on her stomach.

But the decorated athlete continued her quest as she uploaded a third try on July 1 following a trip to Paris. This time, she had made significant headway, not only managing to pull the skirt up to her waist but also buttoning it.

However, the zipper was the final straw as it did not budge, proving she was close but not exactly the right size.

The snug fit was met with excitement from Williams, who said, “Well, we’ve made a lot of progress. … I’m not as sad … it’s a little tight. I can’t really breathe. … I might have to do one more video.”

While a fourth video has yet to be shared, fans are patiently waiting for an update.

Several others who flooded the post’s comment section raved about her most recent look, her body, clothing, and makeup included. Williams has had a series of hits and misses when it comes to her glam in recent months, but several fans now believe she has the perfect team in place to keep her looking stellar amid complaints about her stepping out in public looking drab instead of fab.

Serena Williams has called out a five-star hotel in Paris for denying her family access to a rooftop restaurant despite it being completely empty.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner took to X to publicly complain about the treatment she received at The Peninsula Hotel on Monday, sharing her annoyance at the way in which her visit went down.

‘Yikes,’ Williams wrote. ‘@peninsulaparis I’ve been denied access to rooftop to eat in a empty restaurant of nicer places but never with my kids. Always a first.’

Williams also shared a snap of the sign on the hotel, so that her followers could know which establishment she was talking about.

The Peninsula Hotel later expressed regret for turning down Williams, sharing on X: ‘Dear Mrs. Williams, Please accept our deepest apologies for the disappointment you encountered tonight.

‘Unfortunately, our rooftop bar was indeed fully booked and the only unoccupied tables you saw belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was fully reserved.

‘We have always been honored to welcome you and will always be to welcome you again. The Peninsula Paris.’

Williams’ fans were quick to rip the hotel for rejecting the tennis legend as one X user asked: ‘How does one get denied when they are Serena Williams…… lol’

‘Glad you didn’t have to waste money there,’ another fan pointed out.

‘You’re better off not going, their food is subpar — I’ve unfortunately had to pay for it quite a few times,’ someone else said.

Serena Williams Has the Perfect Response for People Who Call Her 'Manly' | Glamour

Williams has attended several Olympic disciplines with her six-year-old daughter, Olympia, and her family in Paris.

She was also among several high-profile names to be part of the Games’ opening ceremony on July 26, as she shared a boat with Rafael Nadal, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci.

Williams described the ceremony as ‘unforgettable.’

‘From being part of an amazing Opening Ceremony at the Paris Olympics-to riding in the boat in the rain-and it was pouring! So much so my lashes came right on off,’ she joked on X.

On top of her Grand Slam victories, Williams has four Olympic gold medals to her name, including in both singles and doubles in London in 2012.

Novak Djokovic was overcome with emotion after winning Olympic gold in the men’s singles tennis at the Paris Games to complete a career dream and join one of the sport’s most exclusive clubs. Djokovic’s opponent Carlos Alcaraz was left in tears after going down to to the 24-time grand slam champion 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) in a pulsating gold medal match at Roland Garros.

They were shattering scenes for the 21-year-old Spaniard, who gave his all in one of the highest quality and closely fought men’s Olympic Games finals in recent memory. But it was Djokovic who came up clutch when it mattered most after finding another gear in both the first and second set tiebreaks to finally clinch the one missing piece from his extraordinary trophy cabinet.

The 37-year-old described winning Olympics gold as “probably the biggest sporting success” he’s achieved and “most special feeling”. And victory saw Djokovic join Serena Williams – who was watching in the stands – Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf as one of only five players to win all four slams and Olympic singles gold.

Carlos Alcaraz follows Rafael Nadal after beating world no. 1 Novak Djokovic

“I thought carrying the flag at the opening ceremony for my country at the 2012 Olympics was the best feeling an athlete could have until today,” Djokovic said afterwards. “Now at the age of 37 and facing a 21-year-old who is probably the best player in the world right now, winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back, I can say that this is probably the biggest sporting success I have ever had.”

Many would have been forgiven for thinking this might be Djokovic’s final Olympics, having seen his great rival Nadal farewell Roland Garros already this year. But in a bombshell announcement after his victory in the Olympics final, Djokovic said he wanted to try and defend his title at the Los Angeles Games in four years – when the Serb will be 41.

“I still want to play in Los Angeles,” he said after the match. “I enjoy playing for my country and the Olympic Games particularly and Davis Cup, being part of the team.” If anyone can defy what most consider possible it’s Djokovic, who has done so time and again on his way to just about every record in the sport.

The Serb only recently underwent surgery for a torn meniscus before the French Open, only to bounce back as a Wimbledon finalist and Olympic winner within two months, and he’s still chasing a 25th major singles title to push past Australian great Margaret Court to own the all-time record outright. And the relentless Serb admitted his passion and drive are just as strong as ever, despite finally realising his Olympic dream after first playing at the 2008 Beijing Games.

jokovic’s wife and kids were on hand to share in the celebrations with the 37-year-old in beautiful post-match scenes. As for Alcaraz though, the young Spaniard was inconsolable on the court afterwards and unable to hold back the tears as he spoke about the defeat.

“I think I put more pressure on myself because I was playing for Spain, for the Spaniards,” he said. “It was a different type of pressure… everyone in Spain wanted me to win the gold, and I wanted to win the gold as well.” “I felt that I let the Spanish people down.”

Alcaraz’s idol Nadal – who he partnered in the men’s doubles for Spain at the Olympics – was one of the first to reach out to the 21-year-old after his heartbreak. “Carlos, even though I know that today is a difficult day, value a medal that is very important for the whole country and you’ll see, in time, that for you too,” Nadal wrote on Instagram.

Alcaraz saved a break point in the second game of the match and three more in the fourth, before Djokovic responded with three of his own. Alcaraz also staved off a set point before Djokovic claimed a marathon 93-minute opener set in a dominant tiebreak. The second set followed a similar pattern, with the Spaniard saving another break in the third game before going down to Djokovic in the tiebreak again as the Serb wrote more history.

On Sunday, August 4th, we will witness a thrilling battle for the Olympic gold medal in men’s singles tennis. The legendary Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz. The Dailysports team of analysts has prepared predictions and bets for this match.

Novak Djokovic

The 37-year-old Serbian entered the Olympics as the world’s second-ranked player. This season has not been particularly favorable for Djokovic. He lost in the semifinals of his favorite Australian Open to Jannik Sinner, exited Roland Garros in the quarterfinals due to injury, and was defeated in the Wimbledon final. So far in 2024, Djokovic has yet to win a trophy.

The draw for the Olympics was quite favorable for Djokovic. However, he had to play a grand match against Rafael Nadal in the second round, which he won convincingly in straight sets. Djokovic then defeated Germany’s Dominik Koepfer, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, and comfortably beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals.

Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz is the world’s third-ranked player. This season has been fantastic for him. After losing to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Alcaraz went on to win two consecutive Grand Slam tournaments – Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He also triumphed at the Indian Wells Masters. Now, the young Spaniard has reached another final.

In the semifinals, Alcaraz surprisingly easily defeated Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, winning both sets 6-1. Before that, he ousted Tommy Paul of the USA, Roman Safiullin, Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, and Lebanon’s Hady Habib. Like Djokovic, Alcaraz has not lost a set at the Olympics so far.

Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz prediction

Djokovic is an absolute legend, but Alcaraz currently looks like the strongest tennis player on the planet. My bet is that Spain will win the Olympic gold.

At the fifth time of asking, Novak Djokovic is finally into an Olympic final.

The Olympic Games haven’t always been the happiest of hunting grounds for arguably the greatest male player of all time, with Djokovic on the wrong side of some big results throughout his Olympic career.

However, after claiming bronze at the Beijing 2008 Games, he is guaranteed at least a silver medal after beating Lorenzo Musetti in Friday’s semi-final.

Carlos Alcaraz stands between him and a gold medal but, by reaching the final, he has already matched two other legends.

He, Serena Williams, and Roger Federer are now the only players in the modern era to reach singles finals after their 30th birthdays.

Serena Williams – London 2012

Having already claimed two doubles golds, Williams finally claimed Olympic singles gold at the age of 30, producing one of the most dominant runs in Games history.

Seeded fourth, the US star downed Jelena Jankovic for the loss of just four games in round one, before dropping five games to Urszula Radwanska in round two – the most games she dropped in any match.

Williams then stormed past Vera Zvonareva and Caroline Wozniacki to reach the last eight, before downing world No 1 Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-2 to reach the gold medal match.

She famously dropped just one game against Maria Sharapova to take the title, and also won a third doubles crown alongside sister Venus.

The London Games also saw a 30-year-old Federer reach the final, claiming his only Olympic singles medal.

On his beloved Centre Court, the Swiss star battled past Alejandro Falla in three sets to start his campaign, before easing past Julien Benneteau and Denis Istomin to reach the last eight.

There, he saw off the big-serving John Isner in straight sets, before scraping past Juan Martin del Potro in the last four, prevailing 19-17 in an extraordinary third set.

Perhaps fatigued by that epic, Federer was beaten comfortably by Andy Murray in the final, the Brit prevailing 6-2, 6-1, 7-5.

The No 1 seed was tested at times against Musetti but was largely comfortable in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph, and all eyes are now on how he fares against Alcaraz on Sunday.

The Olympic Games have been underway for a week since their inauguration, and within the three disciplines with the most events – gymnastics, swimming, and track and field – we’ve seen the majority of gymnastics and swimming competitions, with a couple of gold medals for the sublime Simone Biles and four gold medals for Léon Marchand in swimming. With only two days of swimming activities left, the focus now shifts to track and field, with several US athletes emerging as favorites, especially on the track.

However, when the proud dad and husband took a break from spectating at the Games, his Twitter timeline turned into a bit of a mess.

While enjoying an outing at Disneyland Paris with his daughters, Ohanian took a moment to record a video to promote the upcoming Athlos track meet, which will host 36 of the sport’s fastest stars, such as Gabby Thomas, Faith Kipyegon, and Alexis Holmes, to name a few, on Sept. 26 in New York.

“It’s the largest prize ever in the history of track and field. The winners are going to get $60,000 each at that event,” he said. Speaking directly to the competitors, he then sweetened the deal, adding, “Ladies, if you win a medal here, in Paris, I’m gonna give you $60,000 as well,” bringing their takeaway to $120,000.

His love for the Olympics aside, the entrepreneur said that he is “just happy to play a role in supporting track and field and especially women athletes. So, this is just the start, but have an amazing Olympics.”

The purpose of the event, which was created by Ohanian and is named after his Athlos venture capital fund, is to push forward the continued widespread investments being made in track and field outside of the Olympics. One of his supporters praised his efforts, writing, “More people like u in the world, with a big heart and who encourage athletes.”

But a troll instead used the opportunity to accuse Ohanian of bankrolling the jackpot by turning it into an expense for Williams. “Translation; ” I am going to use Serena’s money because me have no money to spend like that,’” the individual wrote.

Ohanian had already been in his comments replying to fans, so it came as no surprise that he also addressed the bold critic. He hit back with, “You created an entire Twitter account just to say something that stupid?”

Someone coming to Ohanian’s defense, made an attempt to slight the offensive poster when they said, “Umm…tell us you don’t know how to use Google without telling us you don’t know how to use Google. LMAO.”
