Terence Crawford is back in the ring tonight, looking to take over a new weight class.

Arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Crawford is a three-division world champion and has twice been undisputed. In his most recent fight, Crawford dominated former unified world champion Errol Spence to become undisputed at welterweight.

After a rematch failed to materialize, Crawford turned to the 154-pound division and its WBA champion, Israil Madrimov. Madrimov is undefeated and will be defending the title for the first time, after winning it in March with a fifth round TKO of undefeated contender Magomed Kurbanov.

“The challenge of moving to 154 and fighting Madrimov is a hill that you have to climb,” Brian McIntyre, Crawford’s trainer, said. “I know that the team and everybody around the team want(s) challenges like that so you can say we are the best out there. We have solidified that over the years.”

Riyadh Season has reached Los Angeles and on Saturday night (6 p.m. ET, ESPN+ PPV), Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) faces WBA super welterweight champion Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) in a highly anticipated bout at BMO Stadium. For most fighters, moving up in weight to capture another title is a career-defining feat. For Crawford, who has already held titles in three divisions, it has become almost routine.

Crawford, known for his exceptional fight IQ and technical ability, faces Madrimov, a naturally bigger and stronger opponent. While Crawford told Yahoo Sports he is confident in his body’s readiness to compete at 154 pounds, some believe he may be underestimating the risk. Madrimov’s trainer, Joel Diaz, suggested that Crawford, who began his pro career in 2009 at super lightweight, could face more danger than anticipated against a solid 154-pound fighter like Madrimov. At BetMGM, Crawford is a -600 favorite to defeat Madrimov, who is at +450.

Madrimov is eager for a breakthrough and sees the Crawford bout as a chance to transform his and his family’s lives. Crawford, however, insists he’s focused on fighting the best, not just setting up future paydays against stars like Canelo Alvarez.

A victory for Crawford would further solidify his legacy, potentially earning him a fourth world title in as many weight classes. As “Bud” continues to gain recognition beyond hardcore boxing fans, a win on this star-studded Riyadh Season card could elevate his profile even further.

It’s come full circle for trainer Joel Diaz inside the walls of his accomplished Indio, California, gym, from the burst of seeing the amazing talent of a young Terence Crawford, to the plotting of Crawford’s demise with Diaz’s junior-middleweight champion Israil Madrimov.

“It’s a very tough task. Terence Crawford is the best fighter pound-for-pound and very well-rounded. It’s an honor to work on a plan to beat him. We have a good strategy with a good fighter,” Diaz told ProBox TV.

Three-division champion Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) is seeking a fourth division title against World Boxing Association titleholder Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) in Saturday’s main event at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, and victory has the potential to propel Crawford toward a date with four-division champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Terence 'Bud' Crawford: Biography, record, fights and more - ESPN

While Diaz knows Nebraska’s Crawford maintains a clean-living lifestyle and possesses double-handed power, so does Uzbekistan’s Madrimov.

“You don’t know what to expect with Crawford, and Madrimov is the same way. They both dominate their stances from both [sides], so we’ve had good left-handers, right-handers, speed guys so we can be ready,” Diaz said. “We’ll expect Plan A, B and C versus Terence Crawford. We know [who] we’re stepping into the ring against.”

Indeed, it was a young Crawford, less than 10 fights into his pro career, who was sent to Indio by his then-manager Cameron Dunkin to train alongside another Dunkin fighter, eventual Hall of Fame two-division champion Timothy Bradley Jr.

Crawford was a breath-taking talent, flashing the skill that would carry him toward world titles at lightweight, to become undisputed 140-pound champion and then to sweep up all the welterweight belts, too, with his destructive ninth-round TKO of Errol Spence Jr. one year ago Monday.

But Diaz has also seen Madrimov’s rise, as an accomplished amateur with more than 300 bouts who wanted to make his pro debut against then-154-pound champion Jaime Munguia.

“He’s been 100 percent disciplined … he makes his opponents uncomfortable and it’s not going to be easy for Crawford,” Diaz said. “Israil is very confident.”

Crawford also turns 37 in September, and Madrimov walks around close to 175 pounds, so there’s age and size disadvantages for the accomplished champion to bridge here.

“Those who know boxing know what age does,” Diaz said. “Every camp has wear and tear.

“A lot of things give me hope. Crawford was great at 140. Now, he’s moving up to 154. Madrimov is a solid 154. We’ll see how Crawford’s punches affect him.”

It’s a theory founded in something they witnessed first hand, when Alvarez moved back to light-heavyweight and couldn’t bother Madrimov’s close friend and stablemate, unbeaten light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, in Bivol’s convincing 2022 triumph.

“Israil’s given me a lot of hopes he’ll come out victorious,” Diaz said.

Diaz spoke of Madrimov’s supreme athleticism. He’s a former gymnast who can also wrestle and fight in the martial arts.

“He gets stronger each round,” Diaz said. “He’s really smart and has a killer instinct.”

Reflecting on Diaz’s appearance, ProBox TV’s “Deep Waters” analyst Paulie Malignaggi said, “Joel Diaz knows how to bring the best out of a fighter. The threat of Madrimov is real.”

Fellow analyst Chris Algieri calls Madrimov “a tough out.

“Diaz just hammered home all of the points why – [Madrimov’s] switching of sides, the fluidity … when you speak of that discipline and experience, it makes the intrigue of this fight so much more.”

Shakur Stevenson has been trying to get bigger fights in the lightweight division for the past few years. However, it has not gone his way, and he has become one of the most ignored fighters in boxing. But, one legendary boxer believes Stevenson is headed in the right direction for greater success. Two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford has prepared a plan to help Stevenson get to the top of the lightweight division.

Stevenson extended his unbeaten record to 22-0 earlier this month against German boxer Artem Harutyunyan. Despite Stevenson’s victory, fans deemed it as a boring fight. Additionally, it was his last fight with Bob Arum’s Top Rank, and he has not signed another promoter yet. But the news of him being a free agent has created a buzz online.

Terence Crawford backs Shakur Stevenson’s choices

Fans have criticized Stevenson for being a boring combatant. He uses a fairly defensive style of play. However, ‘Bud’ prefers that the young boxer continue doing what he is doing and make no changes to his style. During his conversation with sports journalist Ariel Helwani, Crawford stated, “I would like to see Shakur Stevenson do exactly what he’s doing now. Keeping his name out there in the media, people are talking about him. Ultimately, I wanna see him fight the best in the division.”

Additionally, Crawford added, “I wanna see him unify the division and shut these guys up who are saying, ‘he’s not this great fighter they think he is’. I wanna see those guys get in the ring with him.”

Stevenson has been waiting for a long time to take on top boxers such as Devin HaneyRyan Garcia, and Gervonta Davis. But to no avail.

However, he feels these boxers will eventually have to fight him for the title given that he currently holds the WBC lightweight belt. Moreover, another sports icon shares the same thoughts as ‘Bud’.

Joe Cordina says “it’s mad” that people don’t acknowledge Shakur Stevenson’s talent

Shakur Stevenson recalls sparring with Terence Crawford

Joe Cordina, a former two-time super featherweight champion, admired Stevenson’s boxing abilities. The Welsh boxer was a rival to Stevenson before, but he still admires the latter’s talent. While talking to BoxingScene, Cordina said, “It’s mad, because I see loads of people giving him stick. But if you love the art of boxing, you can’t knock it. How can you knock that? He hits and doesn’t get hit. He’s smart.”

The 32-year-old further mentioned that Stevenson is among the best defensive fighters today. Cordina stated that he genuinely doesn’t understand why the Newark native is getting so much hate. He explained, “It’s people that just don’t see the art of boxing. All they want to see is knockouts.”

Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains one of boxing’s all-time greats. No questions whatsoever. However, for many fans and critics, there seems to be a slight gap—a void that prevents the undefeated former champion from taking that special space among the sport’s few other greats. So what is that void the Grand Rapids-born boxing legend could never fill if it indeed exists? Perhaps fans and critics could pay attention to what a new generation icon intends to accomplish.

At this stage, it might be easy to deem it a mere hypothesis. But it sounds too good for an assumption. After conquering the 147 pounds, Terence Crawford has now set his sights on the 154-pound division. Why? There was no shortage of competition back home? Jaron Ennis has been calling him out for some time. But to many fans, the move spells a different meaning. Two weight classes above reside the reigning super middleweight supremo, Canelo Alvarez. From a three-weight deficit, next Saturday, Crawford will bring it down to a two-weight deficit. Is anyone in the 160-pound watching?

Yet, a popular boxing commentator feels this precise action of ‘Bud’ Crawford will eventually push him to that hallowed hall where the sports’ exceptionally glorious stars reside. Mayweather Jr. might have missed the signs.

The legacy debate: Terence Crawford versus Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Calling it a ‘missed opportunity,’ @ShowBizzTheAdult felt that Floyd Mayweather Jr. should have tried to get a fight against Gennady Golovkin. But on the other hand, you have Terence Crawford, who started his career at 135 pounds. However, his ambitions knocked at the doors of the 168 pounds, Canelo Alvarez’s home ground.

It’s kind of the same thing, except for Floyd fought a few times at 154,” said the boxing commentator. However, he clarified the objective here is not to detect a fault with Floyd Mayweather Jr. for not chasing the Tripler G fight. As he understood the former world champion staying around the weight classes where he fought, “I’m just saying that upper echelon,” he stressed. That’s why he always considered the great ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard a notch above Mayweather Jr.

The primary reason remains ‘the crazy, the insane part of it.’ He concluded, “What Terence Crawford is talking about doing, he ain’t saying let me meet Canelo at a catchweight. Canelo’s undisputed there; let me go get it.

The comments section is already filled with views, falling on either side of the fence. One user said, “That’s why Duran is respected. Went from 126 to 160.” But then another disagrees with @ShowBizzTheAdult’s argument.

Different Times, Different Challenges

According to them, the primary reason behind ‘Bud’ Crawford going after Canelo Alvarez remains legacy and big payday. If it’s about going up divisions and fighting, why he does not pick David Benavidez or David Morrell remains a question. The primary reason Floyd Mayweather Jr. never took such a move could be that he might feel that he isn’t going to gain anything in any way fighting Golovkin in the middleweight or super middleweight.

Terence Crawford Responds To Mayweather Fight Talk: "We've Gone To A New Level"

Both Mayweather Jr. and Crawford belong to different eras. The former had already made a name for himself from his Olympic days and followed it with professional success, winning one championship after another. The second decade of his career found him going after some of the biggest names, such as Manny PacquiaoOscar De La HoyaRicky Hatton, and, of course, a young Canelo Alvarez.

Despite his boxing skills, Terence Crawford’s popularity was unfortunately restricted to boxing diehards. With his excellent amateur run and outstanding professional fights aside, he received global recognition with the Errol Spence Jr. fight. More so, he will turn 37 this September. So considering that he might have a few years of boxing left before his eventual retirement, a mega fight with another face of boxing makes for a convincing argument.

Both boxers have earned their greatness in their own rights. To juxtapose one’s presumed lapse over the other might be something many fans may not agree with.

What’s your take on the boxing commentator’s argument? Should Mayweather Jr. have gone ahead and taken that risk?

Terence Crawford has as strong an argument as any for the tag of best boxer on the planet.

The 36-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska has been a world champion in three divisions, undisputed in two, and is set to make his super-welterweight debut in an attempt to make that four.

Speaking to YSM Sports Media, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn thinks his man ‘Boots’ would be ‘Bud’s toughest test.

Once upon a time, the fight would have been easier to make: ‘Canelo’ picked up his first world title down at light middleweight, but has since moved up through the weights and won belts all the way up to light heavyweight. Right now he holds all four titles in the super middleweight division having recently defended them once more against fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia.

Throwback to when Terence Crawford left the ‘next Floyd Mayweather’ on the canvas with ferocious uppercut

Omaha’s Crawford is the naturally smaller man who has been undisputed at both lightweight and welterweight. He has beaten the likes of Shawn Porter, Kell Brook and Amir Khan though his most impressive win came last time out against Errol Spence Jr.

That was in July last year and after that protracted period away from the ring he debuts up at 154 lbs in a world title fight with Israil Madrimov on August 3, perhaps in preparation for the further two weight class jump for the Canelo fight he’s been targeting for a year.

Former heavyweight champion and one time ‘Canelo’ gym mate Andy Ruiz Jr, previously advised ‘Bud’ to stay away from Canelo.

“I think Crawford could be the best in the world at those divisions but I think he should stay away from Canelo right now. Let Canelo do his thing. For sure I know that Crawford’s gonna be the face of boxing after Canelo does his thing.”
